Have you ever noticed how a lot of hack poets these days just write down a perfectly normal sentence and add a lot of space and call it a poem?

I would give you an example but since WYSIWYG compresses spaces I can't.

    It's total nonsense.

I think I know what kind you mean. i guess it depends what the sentence says as to how successful it is. A lot of free verse is just prose chopped up funny (I know cos I do it myself!)...I rckon it's a personal taste thing.

I do understand the frustration though - it's very unfair that people get pats on the back for doing it, and make it seem like they worked really hard for that inspiration!

I'm not sure what a poem is, really. I've never been able to figure it out. It's all poetry to me. The interest is in the degree or layers of sharing. Someone who is very, very good, can take a simple subject and give enough layers that a novice reader, or an experienced conoisseur can share some of what's trying to be expressed. Add beauty, and then it's a 'great' poem. I'm not a poet, and have never written a great poem, but the 'sharing' inspires me to write. My favorite kinds of poems are those that make me want to write, and I've seen some that just demanded that I put text to screen... or whatever. Someone once said poetry is an 'empathetic' art. I'm clueless to find any art, that I like, that isn't 'empathetic.'
