If you were to live in San Francisco, what part of the City would you choose as home? If you lived there or live there, where did you or do you live? What attracted you most to that area?

I lived in the City from 1985-1989. Started in the Tenderloin and worked my way up to Nob Hill bordering on Russian Hill. I'd love to live on Russian Hill with a view of the Bay. My second choice would probably be Outer Pacific Heights bordering on Cow Hollow and the Marina. It's clean and crisp in that part of the City; close to Chinatown and North Beach as well as a short distance from the downtown area.
I've known folks who live in the Outer Sunset and Outer Richmond. When they go home afte work they can't even think of leaving. Might as well live in Oakland or the Peninsula!

I used to live in San Jose back in the 70's before it became a mega city. I used to go to San Francisco every weekend. I have been back to SF a few times since then, mainly to go to South SF and the Anchor Steam brewery. If I were to live anywhere near there, I would pick just North of the Golden Gate and go into either Sausalito or Mill Valley.

if i lived in the bay area i think i'd probably want to live in livermore, other side of the oakland hills but still within the sphere of bay area public transit. conncord, pinole and hercules are even more connected of course. i'm not a city person and the closer you get to downtown sf the more expensive everything gets. down by freemont might be ok too. i know it sounds like i'm talking about the entire bay area as being part of the city and i know politicly these are all seperate towns, and for the most part miles away from san francisco itself proper. if cost were no object i'd live accross the gate in marin. probably on the coast side near bolinas.

oakland and berkley are hughe incorporated cities in their own right. there's just no way i can ever immagine myself being able to live in san francisco itself. or even mountain view or san mateo.

way down by felton or bonny knoll would be cool (the sant cruz side of the pinensula ridge from san jose). i love all the bussess and trolleys and bart, but even all that is way too expensive.

i'll take my surial nervana mountains of light. north east of sacramento. where i've lived most of my life. for cultural happinings almost on a scale with the bay, the grass valley/nevada city/san juan ridge area (nevada county) is, as far as i'm concerned, the place to be. probably more art and music there per capita then the bay or anyplace else in the world. (this is almost a couple of hundred miles from san francisco. north east from there. i-80 to auburn then up hwy 49 to there)

there's a lot that's great about san francisco and the surrounding bay area, but like any city, i just can't see myself living there. i mean if i had the cost of doing so, i'd rather start a commune up in the hills.

there's some world class schools down there though. the art college of san francisco, and of course u.c. berkley and stanford which is down toward palo alto.

wonderful restaurants, wonderful trolleys, but no place that i know of for a mere mortal to sleep.

Felton was cool. I remember going to the bowling alley there back in the 70's and it had only 5 lanes I think. I wonder if the Cloud 9 lodge is still there. Probably not. I used to live in San Jose and I used to go through all the areas in the Santa Cruz mountains. I wonder if Highway 9 still has the crazy speed limit signs of 13 mph and such. I wonder if the cats are still on Highway 17 near Lexington Reservoir. I remember as a kid when we used to walk the catwalks next to the resevoir. Wonder if they are still there. Jeeze, me thinks I may have to make a trip back there and go see my old stomping grounds. I wonder also if Hash Rock across from Castle Rock State Park is still the party spot. So many old memories. :<))

I just visited the Bay area, and I really took to it. If I were to live there, it would definately have to be in Half Moon Bay

I lived in S.F. from '94-2000. Started out in the Tenderloin then moved out to the Sunset area, the outer Sunset more specifically. I loved how it was the least crowded place of the city & all homes. I loved living in Ocean Beach and being so close to the water. I lived at 47th & Rivera. The funny thing is that San Francisco is so small- only about 7x7 miles- that people actually considered the sunset to be a million miles away. It was like pulling teeth to get people to come out to visit. They would always say things like
" yea, but you live way out there". It's funny how perspective works. I was never more than 7 miles away, and more often about 3 or 4. If I were to move back I might choose to live close to the park or maybe in the Mission. The Mission is definitely the warmest place there.

Russian Hill is indeed beautiful. I used to work on Green Street in the Octagon House (between Jones and Leavenworth). Magnificent view of Alcatraz. But nothing is worth dying for... even Russian Hill :)

A friend of mine lives in the Presidio and another friend on this nude beach, both gorgeous. I have another friend who lives in the Tenderloin and I found that neighborhood really scary. Although the tranny strip bars were a trip and if I did ever want to pick up a crack habit it would be easily obtainable.
I would want to live in the presidio if I lived there or out of the city in Berkley

Ideally, in the height, close to golden gate park. That would be the greatest place, cause that the area where I hang out the most, except for the beaches. It's alright though, cause I live in the outer sunset now, so I still have easy access to that part of the city.
