But, I really want to get started.

I'd love to make my boyfriend clothes, haha.. that'd be wicked sweet :).. wouldn't he look cute?

Plus, I have an amazing idea of a patchwork dress for myself.

Any advice for a beginner? I literally know nothing..

you still in school? Take a home ec class. Or sign up for lessons at your local fabric store, sewing machine store, or community college.

I learned a lot about sewing by making a couple of really simple patterns. You probably want to make you own patterns, but if you start with a simple commercial pattern you can learn the basics. It is tough to figure out how to shape a sleeve or a pant leg if you have never sewn before. So, I say, go buy an easy cheap pattern and start form there.

I'm all for the starting with patterns. I made my first dress from a pattern when I was 12. You really can learn a lot from them (or some super experienced aunts, if you've got any :D).

Oh, and if you're at a thrift store sometime, quite often you can find old Emily Post or McCall's sewing manuals for a buck or less, and they tell you everything you could possibly want to know, from how to choose the right fabric for your body shape/size to making sleeve plackets. :D They probably have a good updated version at your local fabric store too, of course.

    Anyhow, good luck!

I learned to sew from an ancient sewing book from a thrift store, then moved to patterns. But the best thing I ever did was take sewing in highschool. I took it just to keep me busy and it was the smartest thing i ever did. I think having someone explain alot of the techniques to you and other things is a sure way to go. But with the internet these days, you can get a lot of info off the web.

Vests are a great first project too, that's what we first did in home ec, back in gr 9. No sleeves to attach, just a zipper and some pockets. The zipper can be a little tricky but it's good practice.
