I know that Drumminmama works some with period events, and am hoping that maybe a few of you have done this before.

We will be going tenting this July, and I've never tented as a vegetarian before. I have a very large cooler & a smaller one that will fit in our car if I need it, as well as a collapsible water jug & all the other standard camping "gear" here. But normally when we camp, we eat tons of... MEAT grilled over the campfire. I have an iron fire tripod, and while we do own a camp grill, we never use it because we hate the idea of being out in the woods, cooking with gas.

I can come up with tons of grilled veggie packets & of course things like raw foods, but what else works well for camping? I don't mind eating the same thing several meals in a row, but food spoilage will be an issue here... and we'll be up in the Iron range, where bears & wolverines are a very real possibility, so I don't want all sorts of pre-prepared foods sitting around as temptation.

Does anyone know of any sites that show a few good camping ideas???

Also, my husband & I have been dreaming of joining the SCA and eventually travelling to Pennsic for 14 years now. We are looking into joining a shire either this summer or next spring (depending on when they meet) and are hoping to make a couple weekend camping events within the next year or so. What does a 90% dairy-free vegetarian do at a period event??? I'm going through all of the period recipe sites I can find & trying the ones that fit my diet one at a time, but it takes so long... is there a site that JUST has veggie recipes hiding somewhere??? If any of you have already done this, I would love to know what you did :)
    love,
    mom

ok, drumminmama does NOT wish to be associated with those cult freaks... but in that other life, I ate a LOT of potatoes. cooked in the ashes. and desserts.

WORKING renfaire was much easier because many more of us were veg, or had been and "got it."

Pennsic sucks: just ask the women who get raped there every year: or the girls and boys who get molested... and back in the real world: the mama who was killed and he baby left to die in the Florida heat. Freaks Soulless freaks.
    THey respect NO life.

Oh, I'm sorry! I hadn't realized you were discussing past-events!

Thank you so much. We are still very much in the "wannago" stage. We don't have a pavilion, my husband hasn't trained yet, and my kids aren't old enough to stay home for more than an hour, let alone 2 weeks. And... by the time we're ready to go, I dunno if my body will still be able to camp quite like that.

Long before we actually get ready to go, we will be camping & working at the Renaissance Festival & the Scottish Highland festival. Both have asked us if we would be willing, and I think we'll be ready to start working there within the next year or so.

I respect your crazy to me veiws on faith, but you HAVE to really look at SCA.
It's called the Secret Cult of America for damn good reason.
and veggies starve, except possibly in Cali.
Don't do this to your kids.

I will definitely have to give it a better look before we commit to anything.

To date, we haven't been able to make a single meeting in our area, because they meet on wednesdays & we're at church that night.

Thanks for the heads-up. And no, this is just DH & myself... the kids have little to no interest in dressing up & acting like "people that are dead already."

No, no, the alternate name is Society of Consenting Adults. :p

There are indeed folks that look upon an SCA event as a recruiting ground for sexual misadventure, but you could say the same thing about a Shriner's Convention. The SCA does appeal to many "unusual" people, but to a lot of really good folks as well. It's normally pretty easy to avoid the ones you think are too weird, even if they have rank in the organization.

At most events you have one "feast" or communal meal. Well in advance of the event a "feastocrat" (chief cook) will be named, just approach them while they are still planning the menu with your dietary concerns. It may be too late if you wait until the event day. They routinely accomodate diabetics, vegans, Kosher, allergics, and a host of other special concerns. And you can always skip feast if you like.

Actually, a lot of SCAdians are essentially Hippies who like violent sports. :D

:) I didn't even make it to faire this year! Big bills popped up at just the wrong time. (sigh) At least I made it to the Highland Games!

I'll have to hunt out the feastocrats when/if we ever get to go. Thanks Gaston!
Right now it's still a dream... and with our joints getting worse each year, I have to be okay with the realization that it may only ever BE a dream.

to my former group's defense, they were very accomadating for a few chair-bound women.
Still, I would NOT want my young son around them. I kaboshed it for years. He's now well grounded in social behaviours and could attend, IF dad signs off on Rainbow.

I worked circuit off and on for seven years for vendors, mostly Texas shows, but also TN, Okla shows and a few " hey go open this fair for us we'll be there in a week" sorts of things.
It is a great experience and teaches people an amazing level of responsibility. If you screw up, you starve. Ramen for six weeks straight, anyone?

HS mama, there is always bring your own!
I found that special diets wre only handles if the person had power within the group or was willing to be the feastocrat slave.
