I found out today that I failed a drug test. My boss said the test was faulty because the lab didn't ask me what meds I was on prior to taking the test however human resources wants to do an investigation. Does anyone have any idea what the investigation entails or how long it might take?

I imagine I'll probably be let go but I was curious anyway...

he can't be arrested, there's nothing they can do if the drugs have been consumed and converted into the bloodstream as they are no longer in their original form. he can just lose jobs, or the police could record it for future reference.

Drugs do not have to be in their original form to still be considered drugs. For example if you are caught driving under the influence of drugs, in some states you can be charged with posession.
Now that being said, you will lose your job and that will be the end of the story (and the beginning of a new one).
While there is nothing that the police will do at this point, HR is done with you as soon as they are done with their "investigation". That is not because the drugs aren't in their original form but rather because it wasn't the police who were testing you.

    Age? Job position? Industry?

I really don't get the US's thing with drug testing. Here in Canada it's illegal except for in "highly sensitive" positions like say pilots and school bus drivers

But yeah, pick up the paper and go job scouting, just in case.

we get random drug tested and tested before we get hired at my job and we have ppl working for minimum wage... yes our laws are weird and unnecessarily strict. one girl was a cashier and was a druggie (meth) and got busted and then she went to rehab, kept in contact with a manager and got her job back after rehab. sooo... it doesn't mean your job is over, but you might have to take some steps if you want to keep your job, or get it back.... however (depending on your job) if you're only smoking pot and are a really good employee they might jsut talk to you about it and/or let it slide.

Is there a chance that a second test will come up negative? I.E. Did you stop smoking after the initial test? I don't know what the policy is where you work, but I've worked for two different companies where the unwritten policy (I'm a supervisor for those who were wondering) is to retest any positive test. Often times there are several ways to test urine. Often times a company will choose the less expensive and less accurate test to test the masses. To avoid a lawsuit, if they get a positive, they'll then take a second test and opt for the more costly and more accurate test.

I've also seen where companies will use a positive drug test to weed people out (no pun intended). If you come up positive and they don't like you, you get fired. If they like you, they give you a suspension and send you to rehab.
