talk about missing the point. now, if it's only a protest against using the skeletal remains of what was one, presumably, a female to model your fashion, that's one thing. but i don't wanna see an unhealthy overweight female being used to set a physical standard that i wanna see an unhealthily underweight female. but then, gaultier always did enjoy pushing the line of beauty. and i gotta say, i think that model is a good deal more than a size 20. http://www.dailymail.co.uk/pages/live/articles/news/news.html?in_article_id=408463&in_page_id=1770&ico=Homepage&icl=TabModule&icc=picbox&ct=5
She def. seems more "hip-ie" than a size 20, unless she's 4'6''.... But nice to see a large woman on a skinny woman catwalk.
It is nice to see someone who's not unbelievably skinny, but I do think that more of a healthy variety of women might be used as models. Sure, some women are big, some women are tiny - but why can't the bulk of fashion models be healthy, "average" women? I was just thinking about this sort of thing the other day. When I was a teenager, I found myself surrounded by a lot of people who told me that "big is beautiful" etc. and didn't encourage me to lose a little weight, exercise or be healthy. I would probably be a much healthier person right now if as a teenager I'd been more encouraged to live healthy, instead of just getting affirmations all the time....
Jeez, that seems to be the mindset these days. If you're not bone-thin size 00, you're "fat". Why can't someone have sizes 8 through 14 or something? And what's with the 'big is beautiful' thing? When people say 'big is beautiful', I think of someone around size 10-12 with womanly curves, not a beached whale! "Big" in the sense that you take up the entire front part of your car because your butt is so fat and your breasts hang down to your knees is not beautiful!
Ouch, Jazz....A size 20 isn't quite taking up the whole front of the car... Big IS beautiful. So is SKINNY. So is NORMAL size. No size descrimination please! I'm one of those beached whales you're talking about!
there's difference between teaching people to love themselves and not hate themselves for what they are. i'm a size 18. i know it's not healthy. i can still be beautiful, but i know i'm working to achieve a state of physical health. that means something. hating myself just leads to me abusing myself, wallowing (no pig puns, please). loving myself despite it helps me to keep trudging forward towards good health. and while i feel that big girls like me still deserve pretty things, i know i'm not a healthy ideal, either. why can't we just accept the concept of the healthy female? why is there such dissonance over this whole concept?
i think this is dumb. being overweight is just as unattractive and unhealthy as being underweight. they should just get a god damn average sized model. like me! i'll do it for dave grohl naked and 5 million a year.
I'm a size 22. I think she is fairly short then because my legs DON'T look like that. I'm 5'8". Either way, she's still very pretty. Designers should be allowed to have whomever they want modeling their clothes.
"being overweight is just as unattractive and unhealthy as being underweight. they should just get a god damn average sized model. like me! i'll do it for dave grohl naked and 5 million a year." LMAO!!! I agree (not the last part, but the first part hehe). It seems like people are completely ignoring that there is indeed a middle (8-14s or 16s) that looks good. "Protesting" stickly gals by going to the polar opposite is silly. Why not someone like..... http://pro.corbis.com/images/JS1567354.jpg?size=67&uid={99cdb350-1419-41a3-b8f3-8ec8de1b37d0} Ms. Sophia Loren?!
I know I understand the argument to use gals ranging 10-16 sizes....BUT I think models of EVERY size are important.
I don't see this as a positive move for the larger community. I see it as something closer to an insult, in fact. It was almost as if the designer was trying to say "Oh, you think the regular models are too unhealthy looking? Well does this look any healthier?"
I agree with that one. Hell, if a chick is confident enough to strut down a catwalk in her underwear and a pair of heels, I say, fly at 'er. If it makes you happy, go for it. I think I'm pretty "average" for my height... 5'3, 105lbs, I have a flat stomach/smaller waist, but my hips/thighs/boobs just scream "Look at me, I was made for bearing children" which is fine with me, I mean, I plan to some day. But you would NEVER catch me strutting down a catwalk, uh-uh, no way, never. I say, if you're naturally that way (some women are naturally tiny, some are average, some are naturally big) and in decent health, and you want to sparkle down the catwalk in front of tons of people... I'm not gonna be one to complain or "boo" you off stage.
I think designers should use models of all sizes. It seems so black and white now - you're either a skeletal or plus size. I think having all size 8 models or something would be much better. But in my opinion, I think the catwalk would be wonderful if they used models in all size ranges, whether they be a 0 or a 20. But I doubt that'll ever happen.
I agree, she is very beautiful, but obviously not healthy. That is the big thing for me, I don't care what your size is, but I don't want to see a model of unhealthiness strutting down the catwalk, either way you go about it. Then again, it also says something for her mental state... she obviously has good self esteem, I know I and a whole bunch of other women I know wouldn't have the guts to walk down a runway.
modeling would just be a job like any other job if "anyone" could do it, so the industry will likely NEVER go for letting women of all sizes and shapes walk down the runway. they try to use women of similar sizes so that they don't have to alter the clothes very much but are still able to use the clothes in various different shows with numerous different models. so yeah, they COULD pick a size 8 as the size they shoot for, but fashion isn't really about representing the average (and an average in the US is much larger than an 8 anyway), it's about, well, fashion. making the clothes look good on a blank canvas. blah blah, etc. etc. doesn't make it "right," but ah well. i think the best i would look for is something more in the range of what milan did, having models aim for minimum BMIs, because designers are always going to be more apt to choose a model that best sells their clothes. and yeah, this "size 20" model thing was totally exploitive imo. but then so is the modeling industry, isn't it?
You can be a size 20 and be healthy, just like a girl who is a size 2 can be healthy. Kudos to the model.
Size 20 must be relative to height... because I wear size 14 to 18 depending on the brand... and im not that big.... im 5'11'' btw.
