hiya, I've been considering dreadlocks for a while now, I've actually ordered one of those dreadhead kits but had quite a horrible experience with it and am now considering getting them professionally done. A salon near my house does locks and I talked to the owner for a little bit about her methods and would just like to confirm that in the long run I'll some nice and healthy locks. Basically she wants to use some method of box braiding my hair to start the dreads off and have me come in about every 3 weeks for 2 or 3 months to get roots tightened and general maintenance. She also let me know this was a wax free method. I would apperciate if anyone knows more about this method and how effective it is. My biggest concern it that my hair will just end up looking more like a braid than actually dread. I want my hair to look like Predator pretty much lol. I know the natural method is recommended but I need to maintain a somewhat professional appearance and would perfer the dreads to be even and not have to deal with having random huge dreads and smaller thin ones.

Dont spend money getting dreadlock they're completely free and better looking done Naturally. Get a bottle of dr. bonner's and don't comb your hair and you're all set dont spend money in a salon its better in the long run!

Alright, seriously, young hippies... some of us slightly older ones have real jobs and real lives, and while letting your hair go naturally is better in the long run, it is not the only option. Especially if you are worried about maintaining a professional image during the transition, than it is probably the worst option. Yes, I agree that it is bad that we need to worry about maintaining a superficial 'professional image,' but it's the hard truth of reality.

Deadheaven, I don't know much about box braiding, but I don't see how braiding of any kind can allow your locks to actually lock and matt up, as the individual hairs have to be able to get loose and move around, and wrap around each other. I would also be wary of any method that requires regular professional maintenance, as that costs a lot of money. Sectioning and backcombing is probably the best method if you are trying to put them in, and have some control over the final look and their look in transition.

    couldnt have said it better
you can control how your dreads form & keep em neat, but that method sounds like they just want your $ obver & over
& may never result in real dreads
ask for pictures of some shed done? at intervals like 2 weeks 1 minth 3 months.. see the results others got, but imdoubting mantyy kept em that long

Thanks for the replies, I'm most likely going to have a professional section and backcomb my hair, I've had a couple friends attempt dreading my amd they just weren't able to really grasp the concept (or section very well for that matter lol) I've done some dread research but most of the info I have previously gotten was from Dreadhead and knotty boy back to step 1 i guess lol

do you what? Do as I did, get a metal dog comb and back-comb.

As I say, having dreads are like a garden. You may start it, but mother-nature does the rest.

OKay let me help you out a bit deadheaven

    1. Get the word Professional/Salon out of your head.
    2. Go to a pet store get a metal dog comb there.
    3. Backcomb yourself or just go natural.

Natural isnt dirty at all thats all the advice I can give you >.<
