First of all, I just saw Kottke in the Newburyport High Theater and he put on an amazing show. I've never seen anyone play guitar like he does. Though I've been a fan of the blues for a while and some psych folk and a few other folk albums (Early Dylan, Woody and Arlo Guthrie, etc), I've never really gotten into (or been much exposed to) this kind of folk. I've read that Kottke and a few others were a big part of 'American Primite" and I'd really like some info and suggestions on more artist of the same type. I found some Blind Joe Death (Fahey) and am loving it so far. Seeing as I really have no one else to expose me to this, who else is good in blues/folk?
I just saw two amazing folk/blues fingerstyle guitarists - Tim Sparks and Phil Heywood. It was quite jaw dropping.
you beat me to it! Davy Graham is under appreciated. but he was a recluse so that could not have helped. Nice calls on JR and BJ too. I would say SANDY BULL! Inventions for Guitar and Banjo is a classic under rated cd. He was doing the rock/blues/folk/raga middle eastern mix LONG BEFORE everyone else. In 1963 I believe. The cd I mention is 1965 and is stunning! John Fahey and his cd The Transfiguration of Blind Joe Death JJ Cale - Naturally
Hi....I'm new here but some of these posts I can relate too. Leo Kottke is amazing by the way. I have several Davy Graham LP's & CD's at home, liked him for years especially the way he crosses music genre's hmmmm cool. Another name you may not of heard of if you like folk/blues is 'Jorma Kaukonen' he fronted guitar for "Jefferson Airplane" in the 60's, but his roots are in blues and when he left 'Airplane' he concentrated on his blues and formed a temporary band called "Hot Tuna" didn't last that long....and again he went back to his roots.....check him out you'll love it.
