Well I certainly hope there is a point where you stop losing weight! Don't want to fade away to nothing. :p I started exercising more when I became a vegetarian, so I don't know if I can pin point any weight loss solely to my diet. I think it probably depends on what your diet is like before you change it.

When I ate meat I would feel full but also bloated, lazy, and tired. That is part of the reason why I quit eating it. I still feel full on veggies but without the bloated, lazy, and tired feeling after I eat. If you don't feel full maybe you are mistaking the bloated feeling for being full, or maybe you just need to eat more.

Soaringeagle, people eat meat because that is how they were raised, and most people don't like change. What surprises me is when I just mention the word vegetarian how other people get all defensive and for some reason feel the need to defend meat eating and put a meatless diet down, even when I am in no way attacking meat eating.

I think it's just your perception or how "fullness" is defined by what you normally eat. What you considered "full" for 90% of your life was defined by a stomach full of meat. You just may have to adjust to a lesser "full."

Sheesh tell me about it. One of my new room mates saw one of my vegetarian cook books in my room and asked if I was a vegetarian. I told him yes and that was that. Everytime I cooked from then on he would ask if there was meat in my dish ....that just purely boggled my mind. He asked me a few weeks later for a second time; I seriously wonder if he just couldn't believe that I was a vegetarian. Then my other room mate who is also a longtime friend found out I was a vegetarian and he just started picking apart and asking all kinds of questions and then the all time winner - when a proud meat eater is informed of a vegetarian they have to exclaim how much they love meat and how they couldn't live without it. Lol yeah, carrots are my soul mates. Ok I'm done... Seeing as a how I just recently "came to the dark side" I'm not quite adjusted to the criticism.

& the mindless sheep are like ya i wanna be a man..
or the other chilli one..claimin it'll make a man outtaa woman.. its these messages that have zero to do with wether or not its even really edible but shame you into eatting meat
then theres regular shows..a character announces theyre vegatarian &theyre like "not in my house" or something like its evil..

funniest thing is.. 1 of my freinds was 1 of those..gotta have meat guys...when he was travelin iguess he tried veg tolose weight (he was over 300 pounds) 6 months later &hes absolutely disgusted by it..

id suggest ya cook something really good for em now &then, let em realize its all good food ..then challenge themtotryi it for 6 months & see how they feel

but tothe originalposter, whats your average daily diet? maybe your not eattin enoughor the wrong foods?

Yeah, vegetarianism has not had any good tv promotion since MacGyver. He was vegetarian right? I remember him liking tofu.

advice from a 26 year veg head

what omnis consider full is actually overfull.
Unless you are having the tweaking quakes between meals, you are probably OK.
foods that have high "saiety" indexes (yeah diet marketing) have fats or proteins.
if you are ovo or lacto (or both, of course) a bit of that animal protein will suffice, but it has a high price for you and for the critters.
so plant based fats/ protiens can work.
You also need to learn to snack through a transition (I still need to because i like small meals and tend to think an apple and a glass of veggie juice is a meal on a really regular basis) peanut or other nut butters on apples or carrots (or even red peppers) is a great snack with fat and protein.
other people would use hummus (far less sweet and loaded with garlic).
    tweak your habits around.
and do make sure you are eating a balanced diet.

Yeah I think vegetarians need to eat a lot of food for satisfaction.. Just have many (healthy) things with your meal or have some healthy snacks between. Its good for me cuz I love snacking.

And I feel MUCH better as a vegetarian.
I did lose some weight and I got scared because I didn't really want to lose anymore.. I don't worry about fatty foods if they're good for me, so I try to keep eating those. My weight went down a little when I started but it doesn't seem like it kept decreasing, I think I've been the same for a while now.

I think that's it exactly. I feel full now, but it's much different than beingfull and bloated on meat. I can actually stop before I am stuffed. With meat it didn't feel good until I was stuffed, bloated, and yucky.

i eat like 5 meals a day. I don't like the feeling of fullness, so i spread out my meals. i lost 30 pounds since i started college 3 years ago. it's not because i'm a veg, but because i'm constantly doing things. now i have been between 125-130. I feel really healthy. meat always seemed to weigh me down.

I've always been a really skinny dude (125 lbs) and it stayed about the same when i stopped eating meat. i've been a meateater all my life up until 6 months ago. Like i've said before it came as a result of daily yoga practice. So.. clearly i started getting a lot more exercise when i stopped eating meat. I don't know if its the diet or the yoga or both but i feel 100% better than i ever have in my life. i LOVE not eating meat.

I finally have my stomach "trained" to let me know BEFORE I'm full rather than when I'm too full. It took almost a full year of carefully monitoring my diet to get that back. Americans just plain love to overeat, and (sigh) I was no exception.

The smaller, more frequent meals seem to be a MUST to me too. Maybe it's the way my body handles food, and maybe it's an everyone-thing... but when I eat 3 large-ish meals a day, I get sick. When I eat 5 tiny meals a day, I do much better. I know that Jenny Craig & Weight Watchers both work on this theory too... because that way your stomach is never actually empty - it helps to prevent overeating.

I find that I can get just as "full" on a veggie diet as I could on an omni diet. I've done it twice now. But I have to eat so many of the non-raw carb foods to do so, that I'm gonna pay for it later. It's just better not to "go there" ;)
    love,
    mom

Oh no... I meant that I haven't actually "stuffed" myself on raw veggies yet - I'm not quite sure it's possible, whereas I can totally fill up on things like mashed potatoes or pasta ;)

I can stuff myself on "baby" carrots (actually, they are simply cut down) by eating the bag, but add a dip and it's abut half the bag (I do this in waves. see the apple and juice comment in my post above)
The only place I routinely get too full is Indian restaurants. And our server always teases me for not eating enough! She brings a takeaway box WITH my food, plus the table mates all get some of my veggies. I suspect that since this is the last place I'm eating dairy in any noticable amount, that it is the culprit as it got worse as I droppped dairy at home. I split a small ice cream scoop now, too.

Side note to that, when I worked for Baskin Robbins in the mid 80s, the original scoop had just become the junior scoop.
A perfect "junior" scoop was 2.4 oz. A regular, 4 oz. My sweetie worked for Coldstone recently and a regular is in excess of 6 oz before adding mix-ins. YIKES!

So do I eat so little, or does everyone else eat more?
