They are all well documented, and many of the sources are from reputable sites.

Dude, just . . . dude. The most violent places in America (and in most countries) are the big cities. The big cities, in general, are the most 'liberal', and are usually the places with the most gun control. Washington D.C, New York City, Chicago, and Los Angeles have some of the tightest restrictions on firearms, and they still have high crime levels (although New York has improved a lot). Before anyone says anything, YES I KNOW that big cities will aways be more violent, but there is certainly no evidence that points to gun control making them safer.

Got anything to back that up, or was that just speculation?

 

If anybody thinks that the U.K is all sunshine and lollypops, I suggest visiting Manchester, Nottingham, London, Bradford, Liverpool, Birmingham, Bristol, or Glasgow.

Kinda like the press that they claim is biased even though "many" of their sources are also"reputable".

 

Just because im a hippie doesn't mean you have to hate guns, I love guns, they are beautiful things. guns dont kill people, people kill people. the violence will always be there, the guns only escalate the degree of the violence.

American and British criminologists have long been puzzled and angered by the fact that Britain seems to have learnt nothing from the experience of New York in successfully reducing crime.

The big drop in virtually all types of crime in New York has generally been attributed to the zero-tolerance policy associated with Mayor Guiliani. Now Britain, far from adopting zero-tolerance, looks like it's adopting a policy of not prosecuting many serious crimes at all. This is the subject of an official Home Office directive to all British police forces. British police have now been told that instead of arresting a range of serious criminals, they can be let off with a caution.

BAILEY, Colo. — Memories of Columbine were stirred Wednesday when a gunman took six hostages, killed one and apparently committed suicide in a high school one county away from where the nation's worst school shooting occurred.
The gunman was dead four hours after he burst into Platte Canyon High School about noon Mountain Time. He fired at least once and took six girls hostage in a second-floor classroom. Four girls were released, and a fifth was rescued unharmed.

The sixth hostage, a 16-year-old, was taken to a hospital where she died, said Bev Lilly, a spokeswoman for St. Anthony Central Hospital in Denver.

Park County Sheriff Fred Wegener said it appeared that the gunman shot the girl and then himself as a SWAT team moved in. "I don't know why he wanted to do this," Wegener said.

"It's tough. ... It's Columbine all over again," said Nancy Ostemann, mother of two Platte Canyon students.

Many of the lawmen who responded to Platte Canyon had responded to Columbine High School on April 20, 1999, said Jacki Kelley, spokeswoman for the Jefferson County Sheriff's Office. Students Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold killed 12 fellow students and a teacher and wounded 24 others before killing themselves. Columbine is in neighboring Jefferson County.

Police did not identify the gunman, who Kelley said was between 35 and 50 years old. The Colorado Bureau of Investigations has opened an investigation into the incident.

Wegener said the incident began just before noon, when the gunman entered a second-floor classroom and fired one shot. Park County deputies evacuated the school and cornered the gunman in the classroom, Wegener said.

The gunman said he had a bomb in a backpack, so deputies called for Jefferson County's bomb squad and SWAT team.

Shouting through the closed classroom door, deputies talked to the gunman through a 16-year-old girl, whom he used as a shield and to speak for him, Wegener said.

The gunman agreed to release four hostages one at a time, but at 3:30 p.m. he broke off negotiations, Wegener said. He gave deputies a 4 p.m. deadline, but authorities were not clear what he wanted. Deputies decided to move in "to save the two hostages," Wegener said.

A short time after 4 p.m., emergency workers loaded two stretchers into ambulances. Wegener said the girl was transported to St. Anthony Central Hospital. The second hostage was not injured, and the bomb threat appeared to have been fake, Wegener said.

Investigators were talking to the five other hostages to learn more about the incident, Wegener said. Authorities would not name the hostages.

All other students from the high school and the adjacent Fitzsimmons Middle School were evacuated. The two schools have about 820 students, according to their websites.

Six busloads of students passed through the town of Bailey, on their way to Deer Creek Elementary School, where parents were told to pick up their children.

Jenny Schmidt, wife of Platte Canyon Assistant Principal Mike Schmidt, said this "isn't an isolated tragedy but rather something that should give us perspective."

 

The part i posted about why the crime rate was higher.It had nothing to do with gun control as you suggested.A bit biased on your part,but then i forget there's no bias on the pro gun side,just my local paper.

 

One has nothing to do with the other

 

Again, out of the 80-90 million people in the country that own guns, how many go and take hostages at schools. And yes, it actually is an isolated tragedy, it's sad, but this isn't exactly something that happens on a monthly basis.

 

If all guns disappeared tomorrow, evil and violent people would still kill people.

Unarmed strong criminals can beat unarmed weak people to death.

Unarmed weak criminals can beat unarmed people to death, if they attack in a group.

This has happened twice in my small town in less than a year.



If the thugs carry knives - and many of them do - its even easier for them. (Of course, its illegal for them to carry knives, but that doesn't stop them).


When I lived in London, this happened even more often. In one instance, a gay man was beaten to death by a gang of "kids" with baseball bats. (This same man had survived a bomb attack on a gay pub a few years previously).

So without a gun there are still plenty of ways to murder someone, if you so desire.



In some of these cases, had the victims been armed, they may have survived.


Of course, if the criminals had a gun as well, they might not have. But criminals can get guns anyway. (Gun crime has gone up in the UK since handguns were banned. And the people who pushed for the ban in the first place say this proves we need to ban air rifles and replica guns as well).


Besides, an unarmed gang can attack an unarmed victim with absolutely no risk to themselves. If an armed gang attacks an armed victim, there is a very real chance the the attacker may be seriously injured or killed. Most criminals are not too bright, but even so, such a risk may deter them from attacking.


My final comment:
Getting rid of most guns may be possible, if the government devoted its maximum effort to the cause, and at the expense of most civil rights. Would you be willing to live under such a government? Especially when you consider that over the course of the 20th century, governments have killed far more people than either criminals or accidents have.


(I apologise for making my first post on such a controversial topic, but I thought it should be said, and that you might be interested in a foreign perspective. Although I must admit that my views on this are hardly typical for a Brit.)

Have you bought a switchblade lately?They are definatly out there,but in small numbers.Clear case of government suppression and that brings me back to anti aircraft weapons and plastic explosives.They won't let us have them either.i really want to get my hands on some weapons grade uranium also,after all if i can kill someone with a bat,why can't i nuke 'em.

 

quite true it usually happens when they're sitting in their car or playing in front of their house or in the wrong territory.None the same none of that matters to the girl that was killed or her parents.
