The year 2006 was the HOTTEST year on record for the USA. The year 2006 has already seen more forests burn in the USA than ever in history (8 million acres), the size of Connecticut, Rhode Island & Massachusettes combined! Siberia is melting for the first time in 40,000 years. This permafrost melt is not only uncovering tons of mammoth bones, but the resulting lakes are spewing methane into our atmosphere in unprecedented amounts. Some believe this alone could spell our doom as this increases global warming dramatically. The overall proportions of toxic gases in our atmosphere including CO2 and methane have nearly doubled in my lifetime. Many attibute that & increase in pollution to dramatic rises in asthma cases around the world. Glaciers are retreating worldwide reducing the amount of freshwater that will be available in the future. The polar ice caps are breaking up as never before in history. Huge state sized icebergs are calving from Antartica. The Arctic Ocean may soon be navigable most of the year, as never before. Sea water temperatures are rising world wide, scientists predict that seabeds will defrost just like Siberia is doing, releasing many times more methane. I haven't seen a DROP of rain where I live (No. California) in five whole months! Animal species have been moving north into areas they never were before at the rate of 4 Kilometers per year! these are only the facts I have at the top of my head. Please add more facts to this list. Thanks!
This current month of September is the warmest ever recorded in Britain. Most of us know that these facts are indisputable but try telling the moguls & apologists for a variety of public relations companies under the payroll of: ExxonMobil whose job it is to spread doubt as to whether global warming exists at all;in order to maximize the U.S. Oil industry's $1billion-a-day profits. We've seen their star-player:President George W.Bush cast serious doubts as to whether global warming really exists. (Dubya must protect the profits of his Texan Oilfield friends). Finally after Bill Clinton broke Presidential protocol to tell Dubya in no uncertain terms that he was wrong on his policy towards global warming that forced Dubya to admit that maybe "There was Global Warming but he was not really sure if it was man-made or natural phenomenon"..... Dubya's wishy-washy approach to the single most important threat to mankind, proves that a change of face in the Whitehouse,be it McCain,Clinton or whoever-is necessary before the problem of Global Warming can be tackled head-on. It is the greatest of ironies that two previous third-world continents: India & China are at last industrialising themselves out of the gutter-only by doing to massively contributing to global warming through heavy-industry,light-industry & motor-car ownership: carbon dioxide/monoxide ommissions. Air-Travel has never been to accessable & affordable to consumers-so the subsequent increase in Aeroplane travel is also contributing to G-W. The sea-temperatures are rising which threatens the marine eco-system causing mass extinctions. Also the polar ice caps are melting. The fact that Siberia is melting proves that the unthinkable is happening. Recently world scientists looking into the problem of G-W are not reporting that the speed at which climate change is occuring is far quicker that previously predicted.
Fact: The world has warmed by 0.5 deg C in the past century. Fact: 3degC warming of sea temperatures will elliminate 85% of wetlands in Southern Europe. Fact: Global sea levels have risen 10 to 25 cm in the last 100 years & are still rising. Fact: 30 new infectious diseases have emerged in the last 20 years. The United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Global Warming The IPCC:believes that the world's average temperature could rise by as much as 10.4 deg C in the next 100 years. This is a 60% higher revision than was predicted in 2000 when the panel first gave it's estimates.
It's also a fact that the earth goes through cycles, soon enough, the earth will revert to another ice age.
Fact 1: The earth is on average hotter than it has been for the past 2000 years, including the period during which wine was regularly produced in Nortern Europe (the medieval warm period). That wine is not commonly produced in Britain is sometimes cited as evidence against global warming. But this is cultural. Wine is produced here and is becoming more common. We're now considerably hotter than we were when wine production was commonplace. Fact2: Climate change models which predict the earth's natural cycles according to a variety of factors indicate that the current increase in earth's mean temperature is highly likely to be being forced by human activity. Only when you factor in carbon emissions does the actual warming of the earth correspond with predicted warming: Fact 3: There is overwhelming consensus among scientists that climate change is happening and is being forced by human activity.
Here's some more facts, which some people refuse to believe because they've been brainwashed or being paid by the oil companies. Geez, even G. W. Bush has admitted global warming is real. 1. Human activity IS causing the rapid increase in global warming. Other factors may be involved, but they are much longer term and play out over millennium, whereas human activity has made a HUGE impact in just one century, with the biggest acceleration in the last 50 years. This corresponds exactly with the increase in greenhouse gases produced by human activity. 2. We are now beyond the "tipping point". We might've done something about this back in the 1970s as we started to do then. Smaller, more efficient autos, alternative fuel sources, less dependence upon foreign oil, this was all part of the environmental plans that were put into place in the 1970s. Since then corporate interests, mostly the oil companies have seen to it that we became ever more dependent upon oil for our economy and thus we have the present scenario where not only are we more dependent than ever on imported oil, but our national treasury has been looted by Bush & Cheney to pay for wars for oil. ALL of this - WAR - Global Warming - Economic Imperialism - Terrorism - The World Hating the US - all could have been avoided if they had listened to us in the 1970s and we hadn't let the greedy corporations/military/industrial complex rule us for the past 3 decades. 3. The future looks grim for our "way of life" that young people are dying half way around the world to protect... It's over. The US will never be as "great" as it was and is already in debt to the world's money lenders including many of our potential enemies like China & Saudi Arabia. Pretty soon those countries will "own" us. The US is no longer self-sufficient in most everything. We can't run our economy without foreign oil. We can't harvest our food without foreign labor. We can't produce anything affordable so foreign imports are at an all time high. We can't even win a little war without help from many other countries, most whom won't even give us the time of day anymore. 4. If we had spent the money we did on the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq we could've already had enough alternative energy happening in these last 6 years to cover at least 50% of our needs. Investing in alternative energy benefits everyone, whereas investing in in war benefits a few rich, powerful people, and those are the ones who rule our country (and most of the world). So what if we've already blown HALF A TRILLION $ and have NOTHING TO SHOW FOR IT. You can be sure some big fat cats have pocketed most of it (like Halliburton, whose shares have quadrupled since the war).
To be honest I think the jury's out on that one. It may be that the melting of the Greenland ice sheet, which will raise the level of the oceans by about 20ft will be the tipping point. This would require substantial further warming (possibly about 3 degrees), and will take many decades. It may just be possible to avoid this amount of warming if greenhouse emissions are reduced by a huge amount very quickly. It depends who you listen to of course but I'm unaware of any consensus which says that catastrophic and uncontrollable climate warming and flooding are inevitable - yet.
FACT: People will argue about what will happen until it happens and then they will say... "Thats what I meant to say"...
fact: Sport Scotland invested in a ski slope in the highland region in 2000. It has hardly been used due to unually snowless winters.
No> There still needs to be evidence that global warming is happening. More evidence I should state. People say that the reason the ice caps are melting is because of global warming. However the facts are, the ice caps have been melting since the end of the last ice age. They will continue to melt. The latest report into global warming paints a bleak and horrible future. It makes it sound like our lives are practically over. To call it a macabre collection of horror, would not be that far off. In honesty it is scare mongering. Yes, we should recycle more and yes, we should use less carbon emissions but how are they going to get every single car on the road to get a converter put on it? How? It isn't possible because there are millions of cars out there, choking our cities and clogging up our roads with more disgusting fumes. The future is solar panel but you would need to have many millions to provide for everyone in a single town. Wind Farms, blots on the landscape, very noisy and more of an eyesaw than eyecandy. I don't believe that are pollution is killing the earth. It is killing the people on the earth or making them not as strong but I don't believe the world is going to suddenly swell up, go cough cough on some odd car exhaust and then hit the moon and crack like an egg. OUr lives are not over and if anyone reads that report, they will see how horrific it is and how bleak, dull and how far from the truth it really is.
If Human activity is to blame for the spike in warmer global temperatures, then it is safe to argue, the spike in human population has a direct affect on the temperature of the jar. I beleive Global warming is a problem. I also beleive it is a sympton of a greater problem. The U.S. population just hit 300,000. It hit 200,000 when LBJ was in office. 40 years ago, give or take... How long at the current rate till we hit 400,000? Who is going to feed those guys... and what about the rest of the world. (and are they all gonna want their own SUV??) If we are to teach anything to the younger generations, it has to at least be math. Look at the size of classrooms our kids sit in today, compare them to when you went to school. We cannot continue on at the with the current population trend and not have an adverse affect on the world. One closing thought. Does anyone remember that "Jar of Flies" experiment in school? Do you remember how it turned out? Drew "Every beast dies. Every man dies. What does not die is the reputation we leave behind." -viking proverb
I think it is more of an over population rather than a global warming problem. Having an over population means we use far too much resources and waste too many things. We act as though we have three planets. We only have one Earth. Figure that there is no other hospitable place in our solar system. So I believe that Earth needs tidying up and needs to be resourceful, not wasteful and maybe birth control should be in place.Global warming, if any affect, we won't know for millions of years. By then the Earth will die because our Star, the Sun will have run out of gas.
Apparently we were due for an ice age right now but due to global warming, it didn't come. I don't know if thats true but that's what I have heard.
Looking at the latest report, the picture it painted in my head, was that we were all doomed in five years. "The skies would be green coloured and more and more wild plants would die due to the chemicals going into the soil. Our summer's would be 500 degrees in the shade and in the winter we will see temperatures of 30 degrees. The ice caps would have melted by fifty percent and thus causing Great Britain to be little islands. For Netherland, this would be flooded for good." Grim picture. Anyone would think they built the Time Machine.
If the Netherlands flood, where will all the Dutch people go??? (Germans are not going to be happy about this...)
But the melting is happening faster! And as for tipping points, what's going on here: (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Climate_change)
