Depends on where you are (local and national regulations) and if you want to be legit or pirate.

Well, for anything with range you're going to need a large transmitter. What you can do is get a small kit. You can actually buy kits from ligitimate sources like radio shack that are very powerful, with range up to 2-5 miles. You really need a big(note: really fucking big) antenna and a powerful transmitter to broadcast a signal any significant distance. If you live in the city, with a small set up 2 or three miles is actually quite a bit of distance. There's alot of potential listeners in those 2 sq miles. Really think about this though. Also, the chances of you being able to legitmately broadcast a signal is slim. If you're in college, ask if they have a radio station you can get some slots in.
Also, I don't think you can get an fm frequency. I mean, you can, but it's really hard.

Dont forget to advertise. Print out your station name and frequence with "PIRATE FUCKING RADIO" under it and throw them off a high place into a crowded area

When I was a kid, we used to have one of those big ´ol aerial antenas on the roof of our house. I would switch the cables on the back of my VCR so that whatever tape I was playing would be broadcast out thru my antena instead of being piped down to the T.V. On a good day I could cover about 4 square blocks.

Now I know that this is very ilegal and it´ll get anybody that tries it into a mess of trouble.
