I could care less how they dress, they've made money and therefore are more than welcome to show it.

Metallica are more in touch with their fans than anyone else who has become as famous as themselves, and even some who havent. They sign autographs, invite people from the fanclub to come to jams, all sorts of things, they also have done things for other musicians, such as lars stepping up to sony in defence of Beatallica.

The napster incident was handled the same way anyone else would have handled it. If you steal my music and refuse to take it off your site, I will sue you, or beat the fuck out of you.. As far as suing the fans, it never would have come to that if napster had of simply removed the song when they were first asked.

I said they were TRYING to play aggresive kick ass metal. TRYING being the key word. I apreciate that they made the effort, which I find totaly lacking in the pop oriented load albums.

Second, I never said Sepultura are not metal. Go back and read my post again. That simply never happenned.

No, that is not true. At least thousands of bands were illegaly available on napster. Out of those thousands only a small fraction made a big deal out of it. Out of that small fraction, metalica was the most vocal. So clearly, very few handled it the same way.

Do some research. The fraction of band who stood up to this may be small from a vocal point, Mainly Metallica and Dr. Dre, but many artists have given thanks to them for having the balls to do what they did, and only a few have said anything against it, and in doing so, were probably just doing it as a publicity stunt.

Also, this wasn't about Metallica's discography being availible, this was about an unreleased song leaked onto their service. Metallica requested that it be removed, they did not remove it, so they asked to have all of their songs removed or they would seek legal action, the songs weren't removed and record companies went to work. Metallica and Dr. Dre were the two big names in the suit, but there were many, many more.

If napster would have pulled "I Disappear" from their service, none of this would have taken place.

Man, this is getting nowhere. Old Metallica fans don't like them anymore because they play another kind of music now. They find that music shittier because the different sound doesn't appeal to them. It's that simple. And I fully agree with them.

Edit: Oh yeah, and most of them also don't like their new image, which I also find quite logical.

I agree with the top part 100%. As for their new image: who cares what the look like. You don't have to look a certain way to be able to play.

Very true, but it's a fact that a lot of fans of the older Metallica don't like their present image. I was stating it so that part of the discussion is clear.

To say that none of the old fans like them anymore is quite a generalization, although if it is found to be completely true, I would be the exception.

Maybe that's because I'm not so narrowminded to believe that music should sound like "this" and not "that" or because I'm not bitter about the napster trial.

Ok saying that none of the fans like them anymore is wrong. But most of their 'old fans' don't. And Metallica, for the most part, has replaced all the fans they lost with new fans.

Personally I don't give a rat's ass about the whole napster thing. I just don't like their newer material.

Metallideth, you should be a minister of propaganda. No matter how much double talk you do you can't obscure the fact that in the transition from justice to black to load every change in sound was a change towards more comercial/mainstream apeal. No, they didn't try to sound as comercial as posible, but they did specificaly change to gain new fans and that makes them sell outs. As for napster, they are specificaly known as the band that threw a major public hissyfit, there reaction in that regard is noted by everyone, there is no debate about that, there for they did react in a unique way and not like everyone else. But, I begin to think that you are just such a blindly devoted fan that you would defend them even if they came out in favor of raping infants.

Where might one find such a document or recording to prove that they changed specifically to gain new fans? Was this a bit of insider information that I've yet to pick up? Or is it just some garbage that you've come up with to explain the evolution of their sound?

I love how so many people, and only in the metal communities feel that success = selling out. I suppose you feel that no matter what, a song writer will not change their style...

Do tell, if a song that you wrote leaked on to the net and you asked the host to remove it, and they declined, how would you theoretically handle it?

Just because I'm not blindly bumbling along on the "lets hate metallica" bandwagon, doesn't make me a devoted fanboy.

as someone that reads into what you put and takes interest in your viewpoint, i'd say your posts suggest otherwise.

I'm grateful that you take interest in my viewpoints, and I think you'll find an interesting trend if you read into what I had said about Megadeth in another thread, and now Metallica in this one.

I don't take bitter negative viewpoints against artists who's work I appreciate. When I can see where an artist is coming from, and agree with what they do, I have no problem arguing a point.

Far too many threads in far too many forums tend to become beacons of bashing bands by whiney kids (adults too) and I find it of more interest to question their statements and bring up facts and argumentitive statements than to agree or ignore with someone's bold negative statements.

Well, every change they made to their sound was in a more comercial direction, what other motive for changing your sound to make it comercial can you think of other than the obvious reason of trying to get more fans. If you believe that they changed their sound because it was their artistic vision and that artistic vision just happenned to coincidentaly making their sound more comercial in every way, and yet it was sinceirly never in their mind that they would get more fans and radio play by making their songs shorter, slower, less heavy, and simpler, then you have to be the most gulible fanboy ever.
As for napster, first, I wouldn't have asked them to remove anything. Second this has nothing to do with what I personaly would have done, you tryed to make it sound like their reaction was comonplace yet thousands of other bands were on napster and never threw attention grabing hissy fits.

Blindly and gulibbly going along with the band on every issue does make you a devoted fan boy.

Once again, I'll go back to the definition of "selling out".

Selling Out: Exchanging one's integrity for money.

Do you remember hearing ...And Justice For All for the first time, after listening to Master of Puppets?

Did you not feel that the band had changed a bit? Didn't you notice that there were some shorter songs, some simplistic structures? I did, and I still see great connections between ...AJFA and the black album. While this doesn't mean that the black album isn't more commerically accepted, it does mean, to me, that they weren't completely changing their sound all at once.

As for the load era albums, the most "commerical" albums they've released to this date, I would attribute much of the sound to the music they were listening to at the time, James was into country and it shows in what was created on those albums. It would be foolish to say that they didn't know it would bring more money and possibly more fans, but to say that they did it solely for those reasons is equally as foolish.

By the way, there are a few songs on each cd that are of equal length to anything in the older catalog, but we'll ignore that.. Also, if they're such sellouts, who were they selling out to when they released St. Anger?

    According to Panzer...

    - Guys, lets make our songs shorter, slower, less heavy, and simpler and then we'll make money and more fans. Who cares about anything else?

I suppose you believe that Carcass sold out when they stopped playing goregrind and learned how to write standard death metal songs, subsequently, their newest songs are all slower, less heavy and simpler as well, they also gained fans and sold more albums...

You're absolutely right. They obviously don't realize that in order to be KVLT they've gotta dress a certain way.

It definitely makes sense that they'd change their image in an attempt to coast on their previous one...

When Phil Anselmo cut his hair, I could no longer listen to Pantera.

I heard that Shagroth from Dimmu Borgir wears t's and shorts on the weekends, so to play it safe, I refuse to listen to anything they play.

...heh.. If I told you that slipknot doesn't always wear their gay little suits, would you stop listening to them?

I could care less how people wish to dress, I don't subscribe to Metal Cosmo or whatever it is you dress-up nazi's go by...

Stilus of dementis, if music is about image to you... you suck at listening to music.

Nobody is going to argue that their sound changed with their image, but only one of those two things seems to matter to anyone... with the exception of the fashion-wary fellows like yourself.

What I'm getting from your questions is the belief that if I went and cut my hair tomorrow, I'd no longer play metal... are you alright?
