I think you mean "adapt" and evolution and the environment are unrelated. According to shit, we are killing the earth faster than an "evolution" would take place. The earth has evolved over thousands and thousands of years and we've only recently been fucking it up majorly. Just because the Earth isn't automatically ridding itself of polutants doesn't mean that evolution hasn't taken place.
I believe in God. The point is not even about what one's beliefs are. It's about why we would want to pig up our own habitat!
actually environment isnt about protection, its about our selves, we humans, as a group and individuals- WHY is the earth sick (polluted, deforested etc??) because of our greed, if we wanted less (things, status, confort, luxuries, pleasure, showing off...)well.... the earth would be feeling better. start with yourself. WE, are ALL part of this problem, and we need to look inside ourselves, and ask: DO I REALLY NEED THIS? peace
allow me to play devil's advocate here: let's assume for the purpose of this discussion that evolution is happening why or how or what controls is immaterial. if evolution is happening, are we not an evolution ourselves, perhaps with the goal of ridding the Earth of ourselves? are we the parasite meant to reorient life on this blue ball? discuss away....
You need to define your terms more strictly. Evolution is a biological process which happens over many thousands of generations. It has no "goal". The whole idea of purpose is redundant in this debate. What you may be talking about is the earth as a self-regulating ecosystem ... James Lovelock and the Gaia theory may serve as a basis for this idea
I think it's true that the Earth will adapt. Life on this planet evolved from a pretty harsh environment to start with, and the ecosystem has survived several major asteroids. Even though there have been events that wiped out 90% of species at a go, life has always bounced back & become richer & more varied than before. I also think that humans will survive whatever destruction global warming causes. We're just too crafty & adaptable to NOT survive. But I think it's monumental fucking stupidity to use that as an excuse for not learning to treat our planet in a responsible manner. If predictions about global warming's impact are right, we can all look forward to decades or centuries of droughts, giant hurricanes, starvation, and wars over dwindling resources. We and our children are the ones who will suffer.
If you think about it, only 100 years ago we were all living on private farms. If we keep moving at the pace we're going then the Earth don't ever have a chance of catching up.
I personally believe that the enviroment and evolution are very deeply connected to one another...over the long run. In the short term, now, ten, twenty thrity(and so on) years from now, evolution is not somethingI think can be counted into a discussion reguarding the enviroment. We've done a lovley job of buggering it up at a much faster rate than biology can ever hope to repair. I worry about what enviroment my children will have to contend with
yes, I know what Gaia theory is. this is steps beyond (and could be credited more to the McKenna thoughts) Evolution produces mechanisms/ organisms that do specific tasks. I'm positing that humans are a simple mechanism in the whole span of Earth Time. but thanks for being picky about WORDS and not contributing THOUGHTS.
