I have just installed linux for My PC! I got to admit that it is a prittey good distro of linux!

The User interface (desktop) is nice, friendly and easy to use, support is availibe and You can keep your old OS (be that Mac or Windows).

Also, Does anyone else have any other cool things they do with linux.....or are you still to be converted?

Ive been using linux for a few years now, largely dual booting but more and more I can get it to do pretty much anything windows does. Its a bit more work as its not quite as polished the flip sid ebeing you have a huge amount of control. If you want it to do anything in particular ill try and point you in the right direction.

Well, I downloaded it from ubuntu.com. But something I recommend you doing is getting the Live CD. Also, Try other live CDs. I recommend Ubuntu, But it's best to try several.....

Knoppix is the most complete live distro, although not alltogether helpful if your trying out installable distros. Suse and Mandrake are probably the best KDE distros. Fedora Core and Ubuntu are probably the best Gnome distros. Debian is the best overall distribution in my opinion but you have to know what your doing to get the most out of it, not for linux newbies.

I've had a lot of trouble with the AMD64 version of Ubuntu 6.06. Avoid 64bit processors if you want to use Linux. If you have an AMD64 and Ubuntu 6.06, it's simply not possible to make Flash work on your browser, for instance. You're simply screwed.

You can use the 32bit K7(? i think, not sure) or generic 386 Kernel with an AMD64, it's compatible and it works. I made that mistake the first time though.

the 64 bit processor is fully compatible with the 32bit OS. You DO NOT need the 64 bit kernal although the flip side is that you cant use all your 64bit processors features. I have the 64bit Athlon and use Suse 10.1 (32 bit version) the 64 bit version does work but I dont use it because driver support is not as good and some devices (namely my wireless network card) do not work.

    Shed,

If you installed "Dapper," (v6.06), then scoot on over to www.getautomatix.com .

You're quite welcome, no, really. :D (Yeah, I just know that you're going to love it - 95% of everything that needs to be tweaked in Ubuntu is now done for you. Sweet.)

Wow, automatix looks nice, and is compatible with 64bit... I'm checking it out now. Thanks for the suggestion, White Feather.

Well, I tried automatix- it didn't fix ANY problem I was having, but at least it added tons of new software to try to make work :)

The biggest problem I have is getting Java and Flash to work. In linux, it's a major project to get either working, at least if you're stuck with a 64-bit piece of junk processor. I've not succeeded in ANY distro, nor do I know anyone who has.

The coolest thing is turning it into an .iso server so that you convert all your cd's to iso format and linux enables you to mount the iso like a normal CD even from an xp box via ethernet etc
