I say yes commom folks can work and still live a counterculture life but as sad as it is to get things it takes interaction with the real world.

We are all people like us. All it takes is the making of a few wise choices in life, like buying not renting or renting to own or even living in a tent on land that you own or are buying, and building from there. In time, if you were wise in your choice of location, the value of your property investment increases, and if you start early enough in life, and don't fuck up along the way, by the time you're an old fart you might actually be have a positive net worth.

I get that a lot from my conscience...A.k.a. my girlfriend, telling me how many hippies we could feed for that kind of money. I say lets give em a job growing the food that they eat. Hope that's not too harsh.
