I'm not really all that into techno shit, but i'm in an odd mood today. I was just listening to Aphrodite - I got 5 on it, and now i wanna hear something else. Can anyone give me any good suggestions?
Girl do you have cable internet. I can give you some awesome live set downloads, but they're big so you cant get em on dial up, well you could, bt it would take forever. In any case, check out DJ tieso. He is like a god. Lemme know if your interested. Check out these streaming trance stations www.di.fm http://www.hbr1.com/ Theres a hip ravers community, and theres lottsa stuff about techno there http://www.hipforums.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=147 http://www.hipforums.com/forums/showthread.php?t=20917 If you want I can give you some more links.
My favorites would be: Infected Mushroom (all the "Converting Vegetarians" album), Underworld, Prodigy, Futurax, Astrix, and other random ones.
Yeah, luckily we have cable internet. My bf spends all day loading huge GD live shows. I'll try to check out those links tonight.... Other than that, are there any specific tunes I can download from bearshare?
Well the real beauty of trance comes in Live sets, but as for some stray tunes to download Hybrid: If I survive Orbital: Adagio For Strings Underworld: Born Slippy Underworld: Cowgirl Underworld: King Of snake Ferry Corsten: Punk Armin VanBuuren vs Ferry Corsten - Live at Gods Kitchen Paul Van Dyk: Crush Paul Oakenfold: Southern Sun Tiesto: Forever Today Tiesto: Nyana
Aphex Twin is known as one of the best electronica artists ever and his techno work is great too. check out "selected ambient works 85-92".
aphex twin is definetly a go get. squarpusher isnt too bad eirther underworld for the more regular sound
Listen to some real music: Venetian Snares Autechre Eq8or Kid606 Mouse on Mars Abelcain Amon Tobin Scratch Pet Land Check out sites like C8.com, which has a huge collection of bizarre electronica music, or some Labels like Ninja Tune or Warp.
Squarepusher is a good suggestion. But the thread poster should really listen to the album, because his music has changed a bit from it's "original" sound. Same for aphex twin. He makes some amazing sounds in some albums, while others are more interesting than mindblowing.
DJ Tiesto and Armin van Buuren are my favorites. that more trance though. as far as techno goes, the only person i can really tolerate is Bad Boy Bill. Safri Duo is pretty cool too.
Autechre is very good as well. I only mentioned aphex twins SAW becuase its a very accesible album yet amazing nonetheless. but alot of his work isnt as accesible. of the work ive heard by autechre, their work seems a little more experimental than an album like selected ambient works.

Can we stop confusing Techno with Trance please? They are about as alike as Bach and Brahms! As far as I'm concerned Techno died nearly ten years ago, it was killed off by the Prodigy - who took it in a new direction and basically left all other Techno outfits wondering what the hell to do after that. And that was when Trance got going, along with house and hard house, although House had been around for a while, as it arose ultimately as a mutation of Disco. But if you want to listen to a good bit of Techno, look out for the Prodigy. Myself I can listen to the Prodigy a bit, but they're not my first choice, not by a long way, but then I'm not a fan of Techno at all, as much of it is incredibly unmusical - it's all parallel triads and the use of sound synthesis is rather primitive. Another Techno Outfit that I remembered really likeing at the time (around 1992-3) was 2 Unlimited - famous for their one hit wonder - No Limits. But I was about 8-9 at the time. And if you want to hear a good bit of Trance, pay attention to the previous posts in this thread Trance has churned out a lot of really awful stuff as well, for me it's got to follow proper harmony rules, no parallel fifths, double 3rds, second inversions or anything like that, and the spectral evolution of sounds has got to be really exciting and tie in with the feel of the music. One Trance track that epitomises all of this for me is Orion - See Me Here. But really I'm a Progressive House man (actually, really I'm a jazz man but never mind), Trance can be great, but too much of it gets a bit tedious when it's all about climax after climax after climax. Progressive house is deeper, subtler, and because of the lack of stuff going on all the time across the whole audible frequency spectrum, all those extra sounds and samples, which get thrown in very subtley, slowly and not all that frequently have much more of an effect. It's also a lot slower which means it's not such a work out dancing to it and it doesn't encourage all those sodding amphetamines, whistles and bright lights that you get in Hard House events. God, Hard House really pisses me off, it's got a lot in common with Trance, but really it's more like techno - it's all hard saw wave sounds, no creativity in the synthesis, harmonic structure is non existant, it's all in unison most of the time, it's way too fast, and the tunes are pretty predictable, and there's no depth to the texture. Although it does encourage some good MCing sometimes, really vibrant, energetic and rhythmically sound as well since there's a lot of room for rhythmic development over what is such a simple backing in hard house.
"Can we stop confusing Techno with Trance please? They are about as alike as Bach and Brahms!" LOL, I was totally waiting for someone to hit up this thread with that! Personally, I wouldn't know the difference since I don't listen to any of it that often....I've heard our friends talk about jungle, drums n bass, trance and other shit, but I don't know wtf anything is....lol i don't even know if I'm using the right words. I guess I'm a little behind on this stuff. Lodui, thanks for the links and all. I tend to prefer live music anyway, so if you say it's better I'll gladly take your word for it. I started to DL some shit last night but even with my cable connection it was still going to take at least an hour so I decided to wait till today. Thank you everyone for the tips, I gonna go right now and check it out. <3
I don't want to provoke anything, but personally I think DJ Tiësto is absolute shite. Any good DJ who knows his stuff will agree with you... He is like the Britney Spears in house music (I know it's trance, but trance is a type of house.) If you really mean techno music I'd check out Carl Cox... I don't really know techno music, but start with the well-known people, listen to their tracks and look at their websites (especially their favourite tunes, look at the websites of the people behind their favourite tunes, thus getting to know a lot of dj's and styles...) My favourite DJ is James Holden. He spins techno-ish progressive house (progressive house is like uh... well what it says on the lid, form of house always trying to do new stuff). Check out his website www.jamesholden.org.uk or his label's website www.bordercommunity.com. If you become interested in electronic music, check out some IDM (intelligent dance music)... like boards of canada or ochre. Hope this helps you... electronic music really can be great...
Yup, me too... I think any fan of Jazz music (don't want to be discriminating or anything, but Jazz does take a certain amount of intelligence...) would agree, Hard House is the least original, most predictable, most irritating music... overall probably worse than the o-zone song (something like dragontea dim tye, not really worth listening to...)
One thing to add, if you like Aphrodite, that's drum and bass. I'd recommend going to chemicalrecords.co.uk and listening to some real audio for free, and maybe you'll find a whole new style of music that you enjoy. People talk down about this type of music all the time, but I've produced rock, hip hop, trance, and I find producing drum and bass to be the most challenging by a long shot.
I've had the privilege of seeing Carl Cox DJ. Also seen Brandon Block and he was excellent too. The only other big name DJs I've seen play are DJ EZ (top UK Garage DJ and truly excellent if you're into that sort of thing), and Seb Fontaine, who to be honest was pretty disappointing. DJ's I'd like to see are my Prog House favourites - Danny Howells, Satoshi Tomiie, Sander Kleinenberg and Lee Burridge. A couple of final years on my course at university ran a House and Trance event called Cigars and Good Living (or CAGL) and I think they did it all over the place but usually put it on at the union every other Saturday. It made a nice change from all the boring cheese nights they had on every other night of the week (well there were the odd Rock or Drum'n'Bass nights in the dingy tiny bar downstairs but not many fancied going down there it was hot and stuff and claustrophobic). Trouble was though, not many went out while the house was still playing - usually started at 9, and even those who did wouldn't go on the floor anyway because it wasn't cheese. Grrrr.. nobody willing to try anything different! Digweed also played at my union but for the above reasons - no-one else would have gone with me, so I decided not to spend the money - I was feeling a bit crap that night anyway. I feel very guilty taking this thread off topic from Techno to Trance and finally to Progressive House, but then, I do know more about that. If anyone wants to talk about how bloody wonderful they think 2 Unlimited are, then go ahead.
