10 Stingrays Killed Since Irwin's Death By MERAIAH FOLEY, Associated Press Writer Tue Sep 12, 7:17 AM This undated promotional photo, provided by the Discovery Networks ... SYDNEY, Australia - At least 10 stingrays have been killed since "Crocodile Hunter" Steve Irwin was fatally injured by one of the fish, an official said Tuesday, prompting a spokesman for the late TV star's animal charity to urge people not take revenge on the animals. Irwin died last week after a stingray barb pierced his chest as he recorded a show off the Great Barrier Reef. Stingray bodies since have been discovered on two beaches in Queensland state on Australia's eastern coast. Two were discovered Tuesday with their tails lopped off, state fisheries department official Wayne Sumpton said. Sumpton said fishermen who inadvertently catch the diamond-shaped rays sometimes cut off their tails to avoid being stung, but the practice was uncommon. Stingrays often are caught in fishing nets by mistake and should be returned to the sea, Sumpton said. Michael Hornby, the executive director of Irwin's Wildlife Warriors conservation group, said he was concerned the rays were being hunted and killed in retaliation for Irwin's death. "It may be some sort of retribution, or it may be fear from certain individuals, or it just may be yet another callous act toward wildlife," he said. He said killing stingrays was "not what Steve was about." "We are disgusted and disappointed that people would take this sort of action to hurt wildlife," he said. Stingrays are usually shy, unobtrusive fish that rummage the sea bottom for food or burrow into the sand. They have a serrated spine up to 10 inches long on their tails, which they can lash when stepped on or otherwise frightened. The spines emit toxins that can kill many small creatures and cause excruciating pain in humans. Few people have died from the poison, but the spines can badly tear flesh and the wounds are prone to infections, including tetanus. Hornby said people should treat stingrays with caution, but "there is still no need to ... kill or mutilate these important animals."
I just read that on AOL a few minutes ago. It's hard for me to believe that people would go to these extremes, but I suppose that he was so beloved in Australia, maybe people WOULD do that sort of thing. I don't know what to make of it really.
Yeah I just read that on comcast. Umm, it almost reminds me of after 9/11 when people were beating up random Muslims on college campuses and stuff.... Just idiotic.... And it's not like the sting rays people are killing even hurt anyone. It's like if a Puerto Rican man (or something, just an example) killed my uncle, so I started killing other Puerto Ricans.... just idiotic.....
i don't get this. Irwin preached conservation of animals now all these sting rays are being killed....yea, great way to honor his death
That's just ridiculous. Harming innocent life is not going to bring him back. I understand feeling upset, but goodness gracious! What a shame. Messed up people, I tell you!
i just can't understand people. Steve is probably in heaven cursing these people out for being so ignorant.
Steve Irwin would be turning over in his grave right now if he knew that. That is not what he would have wanted.
Most people don't know this, but that stingray was defending itself when it killed Steve Irwin. Yeah, see, he put the thing in a headlock and was giving it a noogie, then he started talking about its mama and...well...don't ever talk about a stingray's mama, ya'll.
wow. that fool had a deathwish anyways. ever seen how he provoked those crocodiles? sticking his arm down its throat & such. like im surprised he wasnt already killed by something else. he probably provoked that stingray. i feel bad for his kids though.
i dont have much compassion for stingrays they're very dull and boring. it's annoying when you catch them instead of fish. but yeh steve would have disapproved...
Perhaps they'll gain some solace knowing stingray died by way of the TV ratings chopping block some years ago Hotwater
Nah, he was soing the headlock and the noogies, but hes trying to subdue a cia underling....his whispers was him telling the evidence he had on the creature.
Actually, he knew how to behave around crocs...he grew up around them and knew what the limits of these creatures were....As you see, he didn't get killed by a croc.
