A friend and me are working on a doll house, and it'll be the ultimate hippie house. So far, it has shag carpet, beaded curtains (which I think I will change to solid wood beads instead of colourful ones.) We got some surface grip tape from the skate shop downtown, also got some diamond pattern blue and brown and cream coloured paper for the "tile".... Could any of you crafty people suggest any other things you would put in this doll house. We were thinking about getting paper that looked like brick to go on the sides, but the house is currently white. We are talking about doing something with the walls, such as either fabic or wallpaper. The theme we're going for is a mid-60's, early 70's feel. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Edit: August 16th - I posted some pictures here.... Right now, the roof is taken apart and we're building stairs out of it. We also took down all the wallpaper tonight, and sanded it down.
If you go to a place like Michael's or Rag Shop you can get all kinds of wallpaper, carpet, furniture, even lights. The dollhouse that I had about 15 years ago was fully electric. You have to run the electrical tape before you wallpaper or carpet. But you can get some really cute lamps and such. I've even seen a lava lamp at some doll house supply stores. You can order stuff online too. I want to build another dollhouse someday, but not until we move out of this apartment. Kathi
I really don't have much I would like to suggest, other than I think thats awesome. I know it does'nt seem weird, but you're building a miniature house. That's wild! You should make a whole town, that would be cool.
Dollhouses are always so amazing to me. I have seen people do such incredible things with them. You really have a great idea with the hippie motif. There is so much you can do with that. I am not sure how big the house it, so it's hard to suggest too much. But, I would definitely pay close attention to color scheme. Orange, yellows, & browns..those are always good fabric colors for the couch or chairs. If it has a porch, I would suggest getting a little fabric sofa to put out there (as long as the roof covers it). You can put little freedom flags or old school political signs up. They sell those miniature magazines. See if you can find any that would resemble an older decade. The beaded curtains are a great idea. Wow..I totally wish you had a pic of the house, so I could get more of an idea. It's so awesome. I know other ideas are going to pop in, so I'll be getting back to you on this.. As far as pictures or posters for the wall, you can always print them off 60's sites. Just use shiny paper to make them look real. Lot's of flower wallpaper and other prints, such as stripes or trippy lines. Ooohhh, there is just so much you can do. I'll be back to check out how you're doing. See if you can take a photo of the house, so we can get a better idea of size and amt. of rooms.. So much fun... GREAT IDEA..
Saw a hippie-themed dollhouse in a book or somewhere a LONG tine ago, but I remember it had murals on a few walls and computer re-scalled posters, go look for old concert poster pictures and re-size em- Magazines would work like that too, a tiny little copy of 'steal this book' maybe? Record albums- give the little hip house a tiny hi-fi and some good tunes. If you find a doll-sized bong let me know where though, my Shaggy ken doll needs one- he'll share it with Bettie Page (yep, got a dollie of her too)
I'm sure my friend and I can make one. I have some old music mags with concert posters in it and stuff. We're in Canada, so we'd have a canadian flag somewhere around that place. It was suggested to put little toy tires around the house, as some other motif outside. I forget what it's called, but I thought it was really cool. I will take a picture of the house tonight, we're working on it in about a half hour, so I'll be able to take some pictures and that. We definitely have to get some fabric. I'll have to take a before and after picture for sure. I wish I had the old wallpaper from my old house. I was even thinking about making my own out of paper and watercolours. I used to have furniture for MY dollhouse, but my dad was a jerk and threw it out. I still had plans for it, but he said it was just sitting in the garage collecting dust.
We would have a neighbouring house, if my dad didn't throw out mine!!! I plan on getting some neat little fixtures for this thing. So, you'll see pictures sooner or later.
Thanks for the cool suggestion with the electrical stuff. On my excursion through town yesterday, we found lamps and chandeliers that were plug in as well. I am definitely looking for a lava lamp of some sort. or some shag lamps. I think i can build my own shag lamp by taking the cap of a toothpaste tube, and running a 'fake' black wire from it. I've had a lot of great suggestions. I will be posting the pictures so you all can get some crazy ideas. I am thinking about painting my own wall paper, then I can actually get the right way. We have some shag carpet in there now. It's sea foam green and the other is white. Gotta love the Martha Stewart Living liquidation sale.
