i know of one place that has Murphy's on tap, but i wouldn't recommend going there. place ripped my buddy off for $20 on his birthday, took his payment for a beer as tip and then the lady said she gave him the change for the beer. this place is a local watering hole in southie, but fuck that place, theres much better places to go to. for an IPA, i really enjoyed HopDevil Ale by Victory brewing company. its darker than most IPA's though, but still very tasty. and the 90 minute IPA from dogfish head is great too.
a couple of good eisbocks worth trying are: Aventinus weizen eisbock Eggenberg urbock dunkel eisbock for those not familiar with this style of beer, eisbocks are created by freezing off a portion of the water, and removing it from the beer. This form of concentration increases the beers body, flavor, and alcohol content. Syrupy and malty, perfect for the fall and winter.
Butte Creek Organic Porter is good. This is a really great thread. My favorite for a really long time was Sam Smith Oatmeal Stout, but my new favorite is Hefe Weizen Wheat Ale.
Had some Trappiste's Rochefort last night. Also tried the yeti imperial stout. The yeti was fantastic so was the trappiste's but they are both way too expensive.
The Yeti is alright; too much hype for me. I do love the New Belgium's 1554 and the London Porter. Both are exquisite. NB's Skinny Dip is mega tasty up front, but really drops off at the end.
ok, got a great find yesterday! i've seen it on sale for a while, but never tried it..... for less than $3.50 i got a 22oz bottle of this stuff called Lion Stout. 8%ABV, big bottle, lousy packaging, and get this - it's made in sri lanka. but i looked at beeradvocate and people seemed to like it...figured i could give it a shot, and was pleasantly surprised by the low price. this stuff is really good! tastes like a pretty average porter or stout nothing to write home about, but delicious no less. this stuff hides the alcohol very well....it wasn't until the second half that i started to notice it, and noticed more from effect than flavor...... definitely recommended for the value....great bang for your buck both in terms of booziness, quality and taste......i'd say quality wise its on the same level as like sierra nevada porter or road dog by flying dog..... finally got the dogfish head 90 minute IPA for this evening. i'm excited!
grrrrr haha have fun man and enjoy i want to get to the belgian beerfest in boston, around late october
I'm no beer expert, but i noticed James Squire pilsner hasn't been mentioned yet. One of my favourite beers. It's Australian though, and i'm not sure if it's available over seas.
i can't think of any australian beers i've seen available in the states other than fosters, which is pretty mediocre. i think we import far more australian wine. the dogfishhead 90 minute IPA was very, and i mean VERY well made. it was a quality beer in every regard, and snuck up on me like nothing else..... however, while it was very good, i am not generally a fan of such extremely highly hopped beers, and my stomach was upset by it a little even until the next morning....beers that are REALLY hoppy tend to give me heartburn on occasion...... but though i probably wont buy it again anytime soon, i was thoroughly impressed by it. still, i'd rather have a samuel smith's IPA any day of the week...
I read here where someone mentioned Samichlaus. This is the most disgusting beer I have ever tasted. Yeah sure, the alcohol content is something like 13 or 14 percent, but it tastes more like a really bad champagne than a beer. Someone else mentioned Sierra Nevada. This is an excellent choice. But the beer I like the most, and I have been drinking it for more than 15 years, and even about 5 years ago, there was a show on the Discovery channel called the Beer Hunter with David Suzuki where he went around the world and came up with the best beers, and I was so happy to see my favorite was ranked number 1 in the world, ANCHOR STEAM BEER brewed in San Francisco. Actually South San Francisco very close to the airport. I have been to this brewery on a couple of occasions and this beer is definitely the best I have ever drank, and believe me, I have drank quite a few in my 28 years of beer drinking. :<))
Fosters is a disgrace to Australian beer. I apologise on behalf of my country for the ridiculous advertising campaign they run to counter the lack of quality, which gets it sent around the globe.
no worries, i mean i really firmly believe that the americans drink the worst beers in the world in copious quantities....budweiser, miller, old milwuakee, PBR, and then theres malt liquor....... fosters may not be a great beer, but i still prefer it to many other macro-style pilsners like budweiser, corona, labatt....hell i prefer it to heineken, too..... in all fairness while fosters ran an ad campaign based off of the large sized cans, its only about 25oz, and many beers come in 22, 24, or 25oz cans or bottles....heineken comes in the big cans, so does molson XXX, and you can get guinness and becks and corona and heineken all in that size in glass bottles, along with most really really good beers (rogue, stone, unibroue, chimay, etc.) tonight i'm trying samuel adam's cream stout, and i'm pretty surprised by it. sam adams is pretty hit or miss with me, but i think this is a hit! up there with their brown ale in terms of what i like of theres....still, i'm less than halfway through the first bottle....... a lot more chocolate malt than i'd expect
25oz cans, huh. They don't come that big in Australia, that i'm aware of anyway. In fact the largest can i've seen in Australia is a 500ml can (almost 17 oz.) But then, i'm only new to the world of being admitted to bottle shops, so i'm sure larger cans exist somewhere
But the dimensions of the can are what make it look so funny. The other beer cans that have more in them are usually like taller, but the foster's seems like beefy, wide.
yeah, same with the big cans of heineken and molson.....for some reason someone thought it was a good idea to make it wider instead of taller. its tough to not spill a little at first when you're pouring it, and you'd get it all over yourself trying to drink it from the can....its really kind of dumb....
Hey I had a bottle of delirium noel, I saw you reviewed it on beeradvocate. It wasn't bad, but it wasn't worth 13 dollars I paid for like a 22 or whatever the big bottle is.
they usually run about 10 a bottle. not worth thirteen, certainly. i paid 6.99 each. keep in mind also that beers like this are meant to be aged - to a point. too fresh or too young, and it may be very different than what i was tasting. other things such as what you've hat to eat or drink earlier, the environment you're in, and even just having a cold can alter your experience in much more significant ways than you'd expect - of course i'm sure you're fully aware of this though. i'm happy with the price i paid definitely...if i'd paid 13 a peice, id be somewhat disappointed.
