While I sit here, bored out of my mind, I read forum posts and wonder about the future. the main consensus that I seem to be reading is that hippies failed at their mission to bring their ideals to the world. I can't help but to disagree. Although I am young, I can see the ideals shine through everyone of my college mates. The majority of them are rather tolerant,eco-friendly, peace loving people. Our generation is very open about sex. I don't know many who don't think Weed should be legalized. just about everyone has tried homosexual sex at least once. Perhaps we're not a spiting image of those who started the ideals in the 60's and 70's... but it is a start. By the time the baby boomers last qualifier is deceased where will our ideals fall? Sometimes it takes a while for change to occure. In this circumstance I believe it will be a few generations. nothing will turn out perfect.. but you'll still see the impression that the hippie movement has left.
I tend to agree with you. The Counter Culture movement changed the USA in several siginifcant ways, most of them sublte. As you pointed out, the majority of people I have encountered in my life have at least a couple of the traits you mentioned, even so called Conservatives. This did not happen because of the Reagan Revolution in the 80's or the Gingrich Revolution in the 90's, it happened because of the Cultural Revolution in the 60's.
i think people are starting to get more aware but i dont think its from the 60s. its from them finally seeing how messed up this world is and wanting to fix it. i think the only reason college kids are like that is simply because theyre college students and thats what they do, when theyre done with college they stop.
