Any fans of the blues here?

I love allsorts of stuff, from early acoustic stuff like Blind Willie Johson & Sun House to Stevie Ray Vaugham, Buddy Guy, Peter Green, Freddie King, Albert King, Eric Clapton and many more!


Who are your fave artists and tunes? And that kind of stuff

 

robert johnson is my idol. also elmore james.

 

Big fan of blues here. I hope to see Buddy Guy again in November. I think that will be my 10th time.


I like everything you named and here are a couple others I listen too all the time:Robert Cray, BB King, John Lee Hooker, T-Bone Walker, Muddy Waters, Ronnie Earl, Otis Rush, Clarence Gatemouth Brown, and some of the young ones like Jonny Lang, Kenny Wayne Shepherd, and Susan Tedeschi.

I also just got turned on to Corey Harris. I hear he is going to be on a European tour in November. Go catch him!

I like the old blues - Blind Willie McTell, Blind Boy Fuller, Blind Lemon Jefferson. Leadbelly, Big Joe Williams, Brownie MCGhee, etc., better than modern blues. One more current bluesman that I really like is James Cotton, though. He is the king of the blues harp in my opinion.

 

Cool you've all listed some good stuff, I've not heard Suan Tedeschi yet, but i'll check her out. I've seen her in the guitar magazines from time to time!

I don't think I've heard a great deal of James Cotton either but i've heard Charlie Musslewhite blow a mean harp amongst others.

Have you heard any Keb' Mo'? I recently got a few of his tracks and some of them aren't bad! They were a kind of modern sometimes semi-pop blues...it's got a lot of humour and a pretty refreshing look on things. Perpetual Blues Machine is worth a listen and Dangerous Mood is a pretty funny feelgood blues.

I like Muddy too...there was a documentary on tv in the uk a couple of days ago and one of the things that struck me about him was his stage presence. it showed footage of him playing in a bar and he commanded the undivided attention of the whole audience.

He's definately a giant of the blues!

 

Robert Johnson is my absolute favorite!
I love the old blues, stuff like Muddy Waters, Sun House, Leadbelly...
There was someone on here who had this thing in his sig saying: "The Blues is the roots, everything else is the fruits." That just said it all.

First off, i'll be slightly pedantic by pointing out that it's Son House..


I love blues music... There's no point in me reeling off a long list because the rest of you will already have listed a lot of the greats of the blues.. I just wanted to say that this music has a deep resonance with me.. It seems to 'speak' to me like no other musical form can..

It's all about the 'feel', babeh..:H

 

I love the blues I grew up listening to it my grandfather was the one who got me into it. My favorites are Robert Johnson, B.B. King, Billie Holiday, Louis Armstrong, Miles Davis and Duke Ellington. There are so many more but those are just my main favorites.

 

Holiday, Armstrong, Davis, and Ellington are very much Jazz and not Blues. They are all amazing and also music you should have in your collection.

I'm feeling what you're saying Jim. It definately strikes a chord with me too. I can listen to a lot of music, enjoy and appreciate it but with the blues it's something different.

I recently read a book called feel like going home and a there was a good quote along the lines of " when you're listening to the blues there's you, your cd player and one man's naked suffering". I think it sums things up quite well but I don't think the blues is a negative music. There's a pretty good Keb Mo quote in a cd cover i've got.

It's a bit long but here goes,
"The most commons statement I hear from people who don't know much about the blues is that the muscis good, but too depressing. I agree in a sense;blues songs can often be sad in terms of subject matter. But to me the blues is a very healing medium. It's made to bring joy, not sorrow - to help you understand that you're not alone in what your feeling".
