Why do a bunch of you say not to use wax? what exactly are the advantages or disadvantages of using it or not? just wondering...
it kinda just clumps your hair together, so it looks like you have dreads pretty much immediatley, but to really knot up your hair has to be allowed to move around and rub against each other. and wax is tough to get out, it can kinda live in your dreads.
Well, someone (from another forum) used wax and his dreads fell off! And wax does not let your hair breathe which can cause mould (sp?) and well, it's really disgusting. Also, having natural dreads takes time, and the process itself is a journey. Dreads, in their natural form, takes time and are in constant evolution. Seeing them grow and get knotty is pure bliss. By artificially doing them, they pretty much look standard to everyone else's. Natural dreads are unique to everyone, because everyone's hair is different. I hope I was helpful. Namaste

wax collects bacteria and grossness! it makes your dreads smelly and oily. say no to wax! real dreadies wait out the process. the process is a spiritual one and must not be rushed!
I do agree with everyone here that wax is a bad idea. The reason I think so is because of how difficult it is to wash out of your hair. I feel it served a purpose during backcombing, before I realized that backcombing just was not going to work on my child's hair. I only used enough in the palms of my hands to make palmrolling work, otherwise, her hair was too fine and too soft to actually roll between my palms. The wax made my hands stickier, which made palmrolling work better, BEFORE the dreads started forming. Even that tiny amount was a nightmare to wash out of her hair, and I really wouldn't recommend it for anyone unless you have someone else to wash your hair for you and make sure they get it all out. It's kinda like the punkers I knew in the early-mid 80's who used model airplane glue to spike their mohawks... always a bad idea to put stuff in your hair that won't wash out.
wax is a styling product, like gel or hairspray. it will make your locks look like dreads in the 1st few week but it will stop them from forming as quick, dreadlocks form by the hairs moving and rubbing togetha to form knotts, locking all togetha and forming dreadlocks. wax doesnt alow your hair to move, it just glues it togetha making it unable to move freely and form knotts, therfore givin the impression of dreads but not actualy having them or helping them form. it actracts unwanted things and they get stuck in your hair because of how sticky it is. its nearly impossible to get out of your hair. people have been growin dreadlocks way before the times of wax, so why use it? dreadlocks are supposed to be natural. if you are after just a hairstyle then go ahead and use wax cos you wont have dreadlocks for long.
what more else is there to say that hasn't been said before ??? wax is evil, evil i tell you Mwaha ha ha ha ha haaaaa
LOL, & if anyone out there is thinking of using wax, may your dreads turn to candles & be burnt to a messy puddle, Seriously tho guys & girls, don't use wax !!!
I don't know. I used wax and it my hair didn't get messed up. I only used it for a few months though then quit because I got too lazy.
Wax is just a pointless waste of money, it will give your dreads the illusion of tightness, because theyre so clumped up with the stuff. Theres no actual benefits your dreads can get from using it
Well I used wax when I started and I have to admit I really think it helped, no joke. I have very coarse thick hair which doesn't form knots very well. The wax held the backcombing in place so that new knots could form at the roots of the lock. SL didn't use wax, just backcombed and look how shitty hers are compared to mine.
