so here's the situation. i just started my freshman year in college. and i'm a huge huge music addict. i try to buy most of my music, but i'll admit that most of the stuff i have is from downloading. i download because i don't want to buy anything unless i know its going to be great. the problem is... the college i'm at makes you install their own security sweet, and you can't change the firewalls without a password. i've tried to download the 3 main p2p programs i know about, but each time the firewall catches them.

so here's what i need help with... does anyone know how i can 1)get around the firewalls? 2)give the tech people a good excuse as to why i need to disable the firewall, or 3)get a program that will have plenty of music without messing with the firewalls at all?

i realize some people may tell me that i should pay for my music and use a site like itunes. but to be honest, i have no money and that just isn't an option right now. but i still desperatly need music!

    you have Two options:
    (1) learn the Dos commands and open a terminal by clicking on 'start' >> 'run' and type in 'command.com'. that should give you a full access session from where you can hack the system by using many different methods such as ripping the 'admin' password from the registry and decoding it on another computer; or you could change the file and file-access attributes(permissions) ; or you could learn the locations on your firewall software and other programs restricting your use of the computer and manipulate the programming or possibly delete them. but all this requires a lot of knowlege and is risky for someone new to hacking.

    (2) download a Linux disc and burn it correctly following the instructions of coarse (or you could just order the disc for a few dollars). pop the disc in the drive and reboot off the cd-rom drive. if you have trouble then make sure your computer BIOS is set to boot from the cd drive before anything else. Ubuntu Linux will NOT erase Windows from your computer! you can tell it to dual boot Windows and Linux during installation (it will automatically resize the Windows NTFS or FAT partition when you select the option). Then you can download anything you want and it is all free. just PM me if you got a question, or post a thread here.

longhairedmama when you say you have downloaded "the 3 main p2p programs" are you referring to the likes of Kazza, e-donkey etc or bittorrent apps?

if it is the former switch to the latter. if it's the latter let us know. they 'may' be a simple way around it...

You can try booting in safe mode and deleting or temporarily compromising the firewall. Do you know what company made the firewall or what its called? I take it the firewall does not stop the programs from running but only blocks socket access. Have you tried using a different port?

I've been using FrostWire. Surprised me, it's even better than LimeWire was.

Good luck with your 'puter woes.

It certainly wont be a desktop firewall or an "off the shelf" hardware firewall
they are likely to be using some kind of proxy filter at the edge of the network in which case you merely need to download a proxybuster, there are other ways but its hard to know what type of security they have put in place - one way to check is to deliberately type a url that leads to a non-existent site. This will give a 404 page and often the proxy at your side will reply with a page informing you of its name and version number. Then you search the web looking for
    ways to hack through.
Heres a good one for people behind a squid proxy running dansguardian
cant get any porn? because you google "sex" try googling s.e.x or s/e/x
another way around a cache is to specify a port that the cache doesnt handle
so your cache is told to handle all web traffic, well not if it doesnt realise its web traffic

    NOW try this http://dnsstuff.com
    now try http://dnsstuff.com:8080

whats the difference - NONE except they have two ports that they handle web traffic on - one for those who have no proxy between them and the web, and because their rate limiters are triggered by proxies, the site on port 8080 which bypasses cache requests -On the dnsstuff webpage Notice those of you behind proxies - two ip addresses at the top RH corner of the page for the top link and only one for the 8080 link - you are bypassing the proxy - see what I mean?
A lot of media sites have ports for people who are behind a proxy, why, because the proxy isnt handling some of their traffic - most proxies dont handle all traffic just traffic on specified ports. there are many proxy hacks and most of them are very simple

If however, your security is monitored you had better check that proxy hacking isnt a contravention of the rules. sice most people put proxies there to filter porn etc and DLing media may be trivial compared to porn -
dont get busted for it get a firewall buster or scout the sites you are downloading from for alterate ports for proxy users
This kind of thing can be monitored but usually the admins will ignore it for a few months unless you really do abuse the bandwidth
