i don't know which to believe...

is it possible to incorporate both? is there any astrological school of thought that does incorporate both western and vedic astrology?

any opinions on the validity of one or both of these, or on the differences, benefits and negatives of either or both?

    Vedic Astrology vs. Western Astrology

    WESTERN CULTURE
In summary, a few of the contrasting qualities defining Western culture, are, first the emphasis on the:

    A pursuit of freedom.

    Emphasis on personal growth.

    Emphasis on individual happiness.

    The development of personal identity.

    The quest for personal truth.

    The supremacy of ego.

A profusion of sophisticated, educated and mental people.

A wide-spread affluence, but profusion of disenchantment and lack of integration of self.

And lastly, a confusion and disagreement of values and roles in society.

    EASTERN CULTURE
Whereas in the East we find:

    Identification with the group.

    An emphasis on harmonizing.

The sublimation of personal likes and dislikes.

    The sacrifice of individual desire.

A traditional focus, meaning marriage, family, children, and spiritual goals.

A profusion of the population in rural communities where the people are less educated, and there is a greater simplicity of intentions.

A poverty and resulting emphasis on economic stability.

Let us look at the methodologies of Vedic Astrology to gain some understanding as to how her practices further reveal her philosophy.

Vedic Astrology is frequently called predictive astrology because of its ability to predict events in life. This ability is due to the refinement in the various systems of the science, and requires significant subtlety of understanding and perception on the part of the practitioner.

Vedic Astrology is based on the Sidereal Zodiac as opposed to the Vernal Zodiac of Western Astrology. Vedic/Sidereal Astrology uses the fixed observable stars in the sky whereas Western Astrology is more time based, determining the beginning of the zodiac as corresponding to the start of the Vernal Equinox. In the year 2002, the difference between the two systems is considered to be between 22 and 24 degrees and indicates the difference between the point of the vernal equinox and the first point of the constellation Aries.

We could say the consequence of this difference is a Vedic system which does not give the sun the same prominence that is has in the Western system. While acknowledging the Sun a s a significator of the essence, or soul, Vedic Astrology, by following the Sidereal Zodiac gives more relative importance to the influence of the other planets as opposed to making the Sun the focal point.

In Vedic Astrology, the rising sign or ascendant, is represented by the sign which is on the eastern horizon at the time of birth and considered to be the most important factor in prediction since it is the most frequently changing aspect of the chart Ð changing every two hours. It is the most pivotal point from which one considers everything, the context from which all of the planets are evaluated.

In Vedic Astrology more emphasis is placed on the Moon than on the Sun. The moon represents the mind which is seen as the agency of perception and consequently is a major determining factor in how one interacts with the world.

Vedic Astrology is also sometimes called constellation astrology because it takes into account fixed stars called constellations. As a result, one considers not only the influence of the planets in a sign but also the subtle influences exercised by the constellations. This means that when a planet passes through a sign, it expresses the influence of the sign and is also tempered by the influence of the constellations of the sign. To practice predictive astrology, one must be able to go deep into the subtle influences of the constellations.

Vedic Astrology also employs mathematical divisions called Shadbalas and Shadvargas. They give the precise strength of each planet in a mathematical figure which enables one to understand the real potency of the planets.

Another system of delineation in Vedic Astrology are aspects known as ÒyogasÓ. This is a unique system for understanding the power of the associations between the planets in their placement from one another. When the planets have formed yogas, they create specific results which are powerful.

The Dasa System (the planetary cycles) is another feature of the Vedic system which indicates a period during which a planetÕs influence becomes fully operative. This enables one to give precise predictions during a particular period.

Lastly, the great sages, in their compassionate nature, wanted to help mankind to reduce their miseries, and thus introduced a system of remedies or Upayas, for overcoming suffering from planetary afflictions. These remedies vary depending on the affliction and include japas, meditation, chanting of suitable mantras, fasting and worship.

there is always a way to integrate different systems ... just like integrating different religions ... provided you are not attached to the "rightness" or "wrongness" of either system and do not try to understand one in the context of the other and vice versa. each system works because of the context of the system.

interrelating aspects of each system to combine them work only when and if the person doing the synthesis understands and accepts the two systems and is TRYING to integrate them and use both of them for a new context that is based on the originals, but not reliant on the original systems for the context to have its own meaning ... if any of that makes sense? that's how i use both systems together.

the sidereal western chart (also can be referred to as a 'visual' chart) is very informative ... well its not the same as a vedic chart, i find it to be a good 'bridge' when looking at the western tropical and the vedic sidereal chart systems.

but then, i can integrate christianity and muslim and hinduism and paganism and satanism without needing for any one of those to be right or supreme to the other.

Actually the difference between Vedic and traditional Western astrology aren't many. Mostly the differences are names and the way the charts look.

Many people don't realize how different tradition Western astrology is from the Modern, and a quick way to see the differences is to look at Vedic, because almost all of the techniques are the same. Oh another minor difference is the system the Greeks developed for determining whether a planet was strong or weak is a little different in Vedic, but not too much.

enlil ... absolutely ... there's actually very little difference between christianity and islam as well ... i guess it just depends on your reference point ...

i know many a mathematician/astrologers who would argue there are great differences in the two systems ... but like you, i see more similarities and the differences are what makes each system unique ... much like different religions.

    Yep.

Many people don't realize how much came from the Vedic. In fact until the 1800s, Western astrology was a mixture of Vedic and Greek systems. In the 1800s, Western astrology was simplified and given a psychological overlay. That is Modern Western astrology. Classical Western astrology actually had a lot of predictive tools that are mostly ignored now. Vedic still uses them.
