okay. so say i am doing a good karma thing by hitchhiking instead of driving, no pollution and such, right? but by being out on the road, every person with room in their car who doesn't pick me up is getting bad karma. if i weren't there, they wouldn't. so am i getting bad karma by consciously inducing others' bad karma?

i'm high, BUT, i thought of this when i was sober hitchhiking today.

I wouldn't really think of it like that.

Think of it as you and the driver creating good karma together.

But it's really your responsibility to create the situation in which you can fulfill your karma.

That explains it. Now I know why so many hitchhikers go missing or are found dead. Karma!

Well, I don't really think you're inducing their getting bad karma.
You're hitchiking along the road and someone has room in their car, but doesn't pick you up...I would say they're at the root of the problem, not you. I just don't see you as the cause. Plus, that person is already the way they are, so I don't believe them picking you up or not picking you up changes that anyway.

i sort of have to aggree with bird on this one, or rather that the one bad is to cause the harm that causes suffering while the one good is to avoid doing so.

supporting public transit does more for the environment then hitching.
since hitching depends on someone driving, yes it isn't as good a thing as using public transit where its available, but it IS better then driving a big empty car yourself.

and there ARE too many places where public transportation is either overpriced, inadiquite, or simply not available at all.

    waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay too many.

You are a choice these people have. How they make their decision, if not the decision itself, is how karma will act.

:) ok, thanks. there aren't any buses or anything around here, and i like hitchhiking. i like walking and being outside.

an analogy, i guess, is i am a hammer, and someone can either use me to bonk someone else over the head, or to build a house for someone who doesn't have one. if they choose to bonk someone, it's not my fault.

my analogies are pretty weird. oh well.

Don't hitchhike, You are only 16 and there are some messed up people in this world. Besides if you do hitchhike and get caught by a cop you will get bad karma from the driver and cop im sure.
