Hey everybody. I'm a little new to the forums, I've been asking and answering questions for a couple of weeks, but I guess I've been of no major consequence. Regardless, I am very excited to have begun my second set of locks! A few notes: Yes, I used a very little wax. Yes, I took the time to carefully section them and backcomb them. Yes, I have a lot of rubber-bands in my hair right now. Yes, I plan on maintaining them consistently with rolling and other techniques. Now, do I think that this is the best way? Absolutely not! I would rather grow them natural, as I think your connection to God can grow most organically then. Oh, and yes, I think that locks are very spiritual, and that has a lot to do with my personal motivation. The only reason that I am treating my locks thusly is simply for societal acceptance: well maintained locks are generally more acceptable. And since I want to be a teacher, having them already is a huge social taboo. Meh. Anyway, these are some crappy pictures taken by a phone. Later, I'll show you guys a before picture, once I can get the filesize down. Namaste!
What kind of teacher are you planning to be? (if your already a teacher, what kind?) And that is just cool... *thumbs up* Be careful with the rubber bands, they can melt... and watch out for the wax. Im not going to tell what not to do, but you should be aware problems whats comes from that. That was really filler to seem that I'm on topic...
~ grow ur dreads how u want to, at least you know wat your doing and feel confident i love seeing teachers with dreads, its inspiring and motivating for young heads like me KEEP EM GROWIN!! lots love brother
I'm going to be a teacher. I have two years left of college. I have been growing my dreads naturally. What type of teacher do you want to be? I'm going to be a special ed teacher. I know lots of teachers who have dreads.
Hey guys! Here are some pictures of my locks after about a week and a half. I'm using the rubberbands to keep them small and regular, and I do play with them a lot (when I'm not wearing my hat), but other than that they do as they will. My hair locks naturally very quickly. My father is Jewish; as in, Hasidic, line of Hebrew Jewish. My hair is straight and blonde, but kinks up real quick. I'm also worried that I'm beginning to see the effects of male pattern baldness, and I wonder if my locks are exacerbating that (and if I should keep them anyways). But I'm excited, they seem to be maturing at a quick pace, and I find that a weekly maintenance ritual while being mindful and aware is very beneficial to my spiritual life. Blah, blah blah. Pictures.
Nice locks, but beware rubber bands, and change them often if you want to keep useing elastics... Whats the green hat called? its looks cool, do you put your dreads into it?
yikes, sorry about the huge gargantuan pics! I don't really know what I'm doing... Yeah, the green hat is just a tam that I found online with a bill. I think it is my favorite hat right now. I wear hats everyday to class and when I am out and about in public. My locks are something sacred and spiritual for me, and for me to show the acceptance of my environment to let them down and show them means something to me. Unfortunately, my job has a no hats policy, so I have to wear them down for that. I tried working with them, but I understand their position, so it isn't a big deal. In fact, the only reason that I'm sharing my pictures with you guys is because I know all of you are going through similar journeys, and can understand. But yeah, thanks for all the support! Are there any more questions?
Well, I've had them in for over a month, now, and I just took all the rubber bands out today. They bands help tremendously at the tips and roots, but the bodies of all of my locks are a little loose... not that it matters too much =) They'll take care of themselves. I do still maintain them vigorously, once a week, and I just did before I took these photos. After a year or so, I'm just going to let them take care of themselves, but I am trying to be a professional educator, and while mild eccentricity is encouraged, it's also good to be more acceptable to society, so that you remain approachable to students and their families. If your students don't feel that they can talk to you, because of whatever, than it doesn't matter why (i.e. conservative values, what have you), it just matters that they can't approach you. I'm not a teacher yet, I'm still in college studying Mandarin Chinese and Vocal music as my minors, and I designed my own interdisciplinary major in Community Studies. Over the summer I travelled to China to teach English (the photo of me with straight hair on the last page was taken in Shanghai), and right now I teach a group of 9 students in a communities course on dichotomies. I want to teach philosophy, as well as Chinese. Anyways, pictures! Tell me what you think, ask questions, throw poop, etc.
Throw poop?... Your dreads look really nice man... Are you going to cut your hair if your students dont apporch you when you start teaching?
No, but I usually wear a hat when I'm in public anyway. I won't be able to do that in a public school, but I will still wear my hair down and back, in a pony tail. If my students can't approach me with a problem, than I'll approach them with their problem. It's all about pedagogy. So, anyways, I put up some new pictures, and few people have said anything! Tell me what you think, people! I hunger for affirmation! And, and Child, throwing poop is what primates do, and as higher-order primates, our 'poop' might be jokes, insults, jabs, political campaigns, whatever. By asking people to throw poop, I'm asking them to interact with a tongue in cheek.
theylook good but id lay off the wax completely at this point & let the natural process take over ikn the closeups i saw signs of some semi heavy buildup
?? I have layed off it completly, but what heavy build up? The picutres on the first page, from the second week that I had put them in? Yeah, I had just waxed them before the pictures. =) I'm off the wax now, I just used it to help guide my hair in the right shapes.
ah ok,,i realized after i wrote it those were older pics..i just saw like clumps of wax in em... your hair looks like ya wouldnt have needed to use any . just seemes like they tightened up fast, & at this point theyre lookin good & ya should just let em do theyre thing, without really any effort except keepin em seperated
