Hmmmm. When someone quits, it usually divides people into two opposing camps. The holier-than-thou non-smokers, who will usually spout platitudes about how you can stop if you really want to, smoking will kill you anyway, yadda yadda yadda...... when what the smoker really needs is for people to understand that actually, smoking is pretty fucking enjoyable and very physically addictive! These are the two issues you face when you quit, and people need to recognise both of them in order to be supportive, as opposed to patronising. The other camp are generally the smokers who seem to want you to fail. The number of times I've quit and had other smoker friends laugh at me, saying they give me two days, or offering me a smoke every five minutes etc etc. It's as though they're scared to loose one of their number. But of course, chances are that they'd like to quit too - they're probably scared of dying, and so hide behind a front of bravado because they don't believe they have the strength to stop. Anyway, giving up smoking is easy. I've done it loads of times
Mark Twain? Or am I barking up the completely wrong tree? Interesting points though, good Doktor, and I agree with you up to a point. But what about the ex-smokers who successfully quit, realise the strain that the new non-smoker is going to go through, and know how to help them? Does that make three camps, or do they fall into one of the two already mentioned? Or do ex-smokers not exist because it's so difficult to quit? I've got to admit though, you're right about it being difficult to understand the addiction unless you've felt it first-hand. After years of watching my mum and sister try to quit, I can't help but wonder what such an addiction feels like.
Yes I did it that way I wanted a sports car and I decided the day I collected it form the dealer was my last smoke. I gave away nearly a whole carton of fags about 5 minutes after I collected the car. I just quit cold turkey and never looked back. Was great I was a bitch for a while but it was great and every time I wanted to smoke I took a drive instead. Awesome and it worked. Get yourself something a little bit more then you can really afford and then tell yourself that you can't afford to smoke anymore because of it it worked for me. Love & Ideas EnonEmouse
