My mom was thinking of buying a sewing machine for my b-day. So far all i've made was curtains for our trailer but i'd like to learn how to make clothes for my daughter and myself. Anybody have tips on what kind of sewing machine I should get?

I found reviews of different machines online, using internet search feature (google). Seems the consensus is that you get what you pay for. If money is no object, get a good expensive machine. If not...well, you can probably find a used one for less. My plan is to probably get a Kenmore, even the inexpensive ones seem to get good reviews.

I've had issues with newer model Kenmores personally, but then I tend to be really hard on machines. My mom has a almost 30-year-old Kenmore that seriously kicks ass! But you definitely get what you pay for most of the time. Like boogie said, if money's no object... I recommend going to an actual sewing machine DEALERSHIP (like a "sewing and vac" store, or the Huskvarna dealership located within every Jo-Ann's ETC store...)

However, honestly, if money IS an issue, I recommend buying something inexpensive at a store like Wal-Mart or even Jo-Ann's, keeping the receipt, and using the hell out of it for 90 days. If it breaks within that 90 days, return it for cash with the reciept, and buy a new one. This might sound dishonest, but all you're doing is using their own return policy... (Unrelated side note: I've recently been informed that all Wal-Mart stores are now phasing out the sewing/fabric section, so I'm not sure how much longer they'll even sell machines...) :) Happy sewing!

Thanks, i'll take that into consideration. About Walmart though, i'm not shure they ever did sell machines here, I never noticed them in the fabric section but that might be the difference between canada and the states, I don't know:confused:

I know the Target here sells sewing machines. I was going to get one until I read the reviews, and the problems people were having were the same problems I have with my 30-some year old Singer... :p

I recently upgraded and purchased an electronic singer, it was reasonably priced and is easy to use. It has a ton of different stitch functions. I really love it. Hope you find what your looking for.
