Recently i wrote this short essay as an application to get into a writing course, as i didn't meet any of the requirements. Not only did i get in, but i got in over several others who had more experience and met the requirements for the course, so i'm pretty pleased with this. It's a bit corny, and i just threw in the last paragraph for the word count, but please leave a comment, suggestion, criticism, whatever.

I have loved reading for almost as long as i can remember. Few things match the pleasure of solitude, of being able to block out the real world and visit a new one for a time. My love of reading evolved into a love of writing as well, being able to shape my own universes for others to visit, and for my own enjoyment. If nothing else, i want to do this course to improve my writing skills, so i can weave a tighter, more interwoven story. I believe with some proper tutoring, i could be a great writer, and if one is gifted with a talent, they are almost obligated to pursue it. At the same time, i would like to develop this talent until it is honed enough to make me a living off of it.

As i said earlier, I love to write – or create, as I think of it – but motivating myself to sit down and put it to paper has always been a problem for me. The flat deadlines for work that come with a TAFE course struck me as just the right shove to start creations rolling down from the hills and valleys of my mind to the vast plains of tangible reality. I also believe that this course will be a refreshing new approach to educating myself, as what lustre conventional schooling ever had grows dull. To be honest, I have not yet made up my mind as to pursuing my writing down the road of fiction, or the more practical path of creative journalism, but i believe this course would be an excellent jump start to either, and would meet the prerequisites of a TAFE or university based journalism course if i decide to head in that direction.

Another incentive for me to complete this course is to... prove myself I guess. Prove to my family and the people close to me that i can commit myself to doing something useful with my life, as it was pretty much wasted at school. And surely a labor that I love and is enjoyable to me will be much more bearable to see through than something i attend grudgingly, and attempt half-heartedly.

I can see myself in ten years, sitting in a crowded pub in a foreign country, observing the locals, noting any points of interest as i research my next novel. I can sense the palpable tranquility of a lush, thriving rain forest, teeming with life, as i picture in my mind's eye the path of a hero slogging their way through the inhospitable land. I can see myself traveling from location to exotic location, with my fellow verbal artists covering events strictly limited to wealthy, paying attendees, and the cream of the nations journos. I can feel the rush of adrenaline as i stand at the front line of a ground breaking (possibly literally) world event, collecting even the most seemingly insignificant details, taking pride at doing the best most through job i can do of something i am passionate about and enjoy.

Thank you for reading and considering this short essay.

I think a spell and grammar check would have improved it--but then it wasn't me you had to impress.

when I appiled a few years ago for University

we had to choose a word and research its history and write a short peice about what we had chosen the word.

    I picked the word 'goose'

my reason being that that was the name of Mavericks co-pilot in the classic 1980's film Top Gun.

I also wrote a short paragraph about it being a type of large bird.

I got in - no problem.

Thanks for the comment. I did run a spell check when i was finished, but i think it corrected certain words to "american english" instead of "british english", so that may be why it seems to have spelling errors.

I'm not really sure why i posted this here. I think it was because it's the only piece of writing i had on my computer. I've been told time and time again i'm a great writer, but i don't have the motivation to write anything just for the sake of writing it. I really should though. Maybe i'll write a short story or something and post it up.
