A Super Duper Yupper Greeting - SNOW,

In the KEWEENAW PENINSULA snowfall is measured in the feet (not inches). What else do you expect, living on the shores of Michigan's largest and coldest Great Lake - LAKE SUPERIOR? Can you say "lake-effect snow". Houghton, MI has its parking meters against the buildings (for better snow plowing) and flags are put on the fire hydrants, so they can find them in the deep snow, plus one of Houghton's steep hill roads is covered by a roof.

My dad went to Michigan Technological University (Houghton, MI) in the early-to-mid 1940's (for Electrical Engineering) and said that Houghton's summers were defined as, "Two weeks of bad sledding." LOL It's better than Resolute, Canada (above the Arctic Circle), whose summers are defined as, "The ice flows are moving." Anyway, you're going to see alot of SNOW in the KEWEENAW PENINSULA. So, your hipforums name is well chosen.

Following the footsteps of my father, my sisiter went to Michigan Technological University (GO HUSKIES!!!) in the 1980's, for a degree in Electrical Engineering, so I've been to the KEWEENAW PENINSULA a number of times. It's about an 11 hour drive from the Detroit area!!! It's nasty travelling in the UP, in winter: "whiteouts", fog, "jack-knived" trucks from slippery "spin-outs", huge snow banks and little places to find help, but still - VERY BEAUTIFUL!

The highway used to go through downtown BARAGA, but too many drunk Native Americans got hit by cars, so the highway was moved just east of town (1940's), closer to the LAKE SUPERIOR shoreline. I guess that BISHOP BARAGA statue wasn't watching over them well enough. My dad also talked about an MTU building called Douglas House (nicknamed: THE DOG HOUSE).

Local restaurants: THE LIBRARY (Houghton) - good pizza!, The Suomi Bakery (Houghton) for good PASTIES (a UP classic) and Nisu French Toast (Finnish), Kaleva Cafe (234 Quincy Street, Hancock, MI) for some more good PASTIES and the Yupper classic: HILLTOP RESTAURANT - Home of the Famous Sweet Roll (apple/cinnamon) in L'Anse, MI. (LINK: www.sweetroll.com) Can't you just smell them fresh baked rolls now? MMMMM I've eaten my share of them. Delicious!!! I even have a plastic HILLTOP RESTAURANT coffee cup!

There are alot of Finlanders in the KEWEENAW PENINSULA. I'm 25% Danish and have alot of Danish relatives, but I found a picture of small Finnish boy in a travel catalog, who looked exactly like me, when I was a little boy (with blonde hair and blue eyes), so I could pass as being Finnish. Now I have some "silver blonde" hair. Like you SNOW, I am an "original HIPPY". You're only 4 years younger than me! Luckily, I still have alot of my hair and I have the body of a teenager.

When I worked at a fast food restaurant, in the 80's, I met a Swedish teenager, who came from a family with 17 kids! He said he used to teach at SUOMI COLLEGE in Hancock, MI. It's a small world after all!

The KEWEENAW PENINSULA is a beautiful place and I hope to go back up there sometime. Don't forget to wear your "Yupper Tennis Shoes", or what most people call "hiking boots". Snow shoes and cross-country skies are also popular up there, for obvious reasons. Let it SNOW, let it SNOW, let it SNOW. Sounds like a Christmas song? Have fun posting!!!

    Peace, love and understanding . . .
