Finally we can buy the Morning After Pill over-the-counter! I think this will prevent a lot of pregnancies, which is result in a lower number of abortions. This is a great move in the right direction! Opinions? http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,210271,00.html
I'd bet a lot of places will refuse to sell it, but places like Walmart who get tax cuts will have to sell it or the state can stop giving them these tax cuts. The woman will have to give ID to prove that she is over 18, so there restrictions on it. I think females of all ages should be able to get this, but I can't complain because we are moving in the right direction. Slowly, but we're getting there.
a woman under 18 can still get it but they need a prescription for a doctor. I have heard estimates that it will cut the unwanted pregnancy rate by 2 million a year! I am over the moon that this has passed. It is the best thing to happen in the reproductive health arena for a while. Who cares if Wal-Mart doesn't carry it. They are a crappy store anyway.
Just a way for teens to be even more secretive about their having sex and having no consequences for their actions. Yipee.
Didnt someoen say its 18+? so only two years worht of "teenagers" who can legally vote and drive anyways. Plus tehre are other consequences like STDs to unprotected sex. Anyways, I think its a great move, does anyone happen to know the legal rules roudn it in Canada?
I guess I missed that part. My bad. Sorry. I still think a prescription should have to be had for it for all women. Unless you can show proof of another form of birth control. I think making it over-the-counter just gives reason for people to be irresponsible.
My opinion is, someone who is already careless probably doesn't care much to use the morning after pill--- why would they go through all that trouble of getting the morning after everytime they have unprotected sex if they didn't take precaution in the first place? I think/have a feeling that most people that might use the morning after are those who might not use birth control but rely on condoms, etc. I had to use the morning after pill when a condom broke when I wasn't using other contraception. I also think it's a good idea for those who get raped--- and sure many might think they should report it anyway, hands down, but it's not just that easy all the time. I don't think it's going to make women more careless, because it's fairly easy to obtain it anyway from Planned Parenthood and what not. Half of me doesn't even see a real use for it being over the counter, because it's not that difficult to go to Planned Parenthood and obtain it. But I really don't see this being a bad thing either. Just my opinion.
You beat me to it. I have the article from CBS on "Copy" right now! I am SO glad. I don't think it encourages people to be irresponsible at all. Many womyn who use Plan B have had a condom break, or had to take antibiotics, which inactivated their regular BC pill, or realized their jelly was out of date for their diaphram AFTER they had sex. All this will do is to continue to reduce the abortion rate (and even people who are ProChoice don't like abortion and are very happy when the rates naturally fall) and decrease unwanted pregnancies. I am upset that there is an age limit on it. Teens, who have less access to ALL forms of birth control need this also without a prescription. If many of these girls are too embarressed or shy or afraid to ask their doctors for the Pill or a diaphram, they likewise are not going to call a doctor for Plan B. Also, hopefully, getting Plan B in the news will help the public understand the differences between Morning After BC (which simply prevents either ovuation or implantation BEFORE pregnancy occurs) and "The Abortion Pill" which is a whole different medication, and is used much differently, after pregnancy has been confirmed. Here's the CBS article.
Oh, and about WalMart not carrying it, In Illinios, we have a great Gov. There is a LAW that if a pharmacists refuses to fill any prescription for any type of birth control, he will lose his license and the store can lose their Pharmacy License as well. Hopefully, all the control-freak, Righty Wing, womyn hater pharmacists will either have to change their ways or lose thier licenses.
From my morning paper, ..Opponents said they were considering trying to block the decision, either in court or in congress..... ... Wendy Wright, president of Concerned Women for America, which led the opposition. "There's nothing to stop a 20-year-old man who is having sex with a minor girl from buying the drug and giving it to her," Wright said.... These people are crazy.
I agree with you! I'm very very very happy that this was passed. I too believe there should not be an age limit. Yes, the morning after pill can be obtained at a planed parenthood, but sometimes these places are not close to people who don't drive and public transportation sucks ass, well atleast around here, so making easily obtainable from drug stores is a good move. Wouldn't we rather sell this to minors, instead of dishing out tax money to raise them and their unwanted child? I find it so hard explaining the different between the morning after pill and an "abortion pill" to these bible-humpers who try to run our country and take away our rights. I'm so happy that the abortion rate will go down. I'm very pro-choice, but if an abortion can be avoided right away, then that saves the woman from going through an emotional nightmare. People who are against this do not want women to have rights and do not know how to listen to scientists/doctors when they explained the difference between bc and an abortion. They need to get over themselves and throw their bible out of our country's politics!
I'm just joined today, so I'm still being all careful and stuff, but I am so glad this law got passed. I agree that it will prevent many women from going on to have an abortion. The day this came out on the news, I had an "up" day all day.
The morning after pill is a step in the right direction. For once a governmental agency has done something I agree with.
Apparently "freedom of choice" doesn't extend to those who wish not to participate in potentially killing a pre-implanted embryo. Charming.
It is not an embryo until it is implanted. Neither is it a pregnancy. That's science, not sematics. I will say nothing to further ANY abortion discussion. Our country is a better place with this law. JMO. Oh, and pharmacists who don't want to do their job can get out of the HEALTH CARE business.
I guess fertility clinics better stop referring to frozen embryos that they keep in storage. We'll also have to think of a new term for embryonic stem cell research. Have you ever heard of the "early pregnancy factor" hormone? It's detectable in expectant mothers after conception, before implantation. When did pregnancy become a disease?
