Why the Treadmill? stationary bike burns more calories, and I can't run outside, it's not an option

no, you don't burn more calories on the bike. with all things being equal, same time frame, same heart rate, etc you will burn more calories on the treadmill.

plus you place your concentrating your exertion onto the quads, which might even cause loss of muscle in your legs depending on how hard you work. on the treadmill, you use more major muscle groups, instead of just 1 main muscle group, which means you expend more energy.

i still don't understand why you can't run outside, because then i'd tell you to do some sprint work. maybe you can get a jumprope. plus, theres tons of other ways to lose fat, while keeping current muscle levels without going to the gym.

but if your set in stone on using the bike, then go for it. atleast your doing something - majority of people just sit in front of the tv.

hmmm all the bikes I've ridden on have a "calories burned" meter and compared to the treadmill ones they are always higher and isn't constant pounding on treadmills put strain on your impact muscles? I can go outside per se, but I'd prefer to do other activites.

yeah. if you're carrying a few pounds or have walking problems using a stationary bike might be the safest thing to do.

well I'm 6'3 and 225 so I'm not THAT overweight, but I still could loose a few pounds. Just check out my gallery.

the "calories burned" is NOT 100% accurate. it just uses a standard average formula based off your body weight input that was used before beginning the exercise. the machine doesn't take into account your fitness level, your BF%, muscle mass, your energy expenditure and where your getting that energy from. and its worse on a stationary bike, as it doesn't use *your* weight in the calculation. it uses a standard RPM (revolutions per minute) for the equation - so it takes into account the level of intensity and how long spent exercising for the equation. so just disregard that
monitoring all together, same with the heart rate too.

more muscles used will expend more energy, like i said earlier on a stationary bike your main source of energy expenditure is from your quads. running requires more expenditure from more muscle groups. if your going to stick with the bike, get into a spinning class - you'll burn a lot more calories in that class than on a regular stationary bike by yourself.

now, i'm not saying the stationary bike is bad - its not. it has its purpose. but running will burn more calories than a bike, with everything being equal, ie the same amount of effort is used for both machines.

now if your going to put more effort into the bike, go right to it. that wasn't my point, i'm just pointing out that running will burn more calories with everything being equal.

cycling is more for endurance and toning
running is raw fitness but it can lead you down the road of injury
i have cycled regularly and over quite long distance (100 miles/160 km), cycle freaks would do these distances easily, so it isn't much of an achievement!!
a stationary bike is good as it doesn't mean inconvenience like being knocked over or getting flat tyres.
running is ok but stretching gently for no more than 3 seconds is the way to go.
for the last couple of years i haven't done much exercise, my usual activities are enough.
