This is probably the wrong place to post this but I didn't find another forum to post it on and plus this is random thought. I was watching a commercial on the "World Trade Center" and noticed and remembered how everyone was just taking care of each other. I then started asking myself, "wasn't 9/11 a total hippy moment"? If you think about it, it might be. Everyone took care of each other. People somewhat became nicer because we were all suffering from the same tragedy. We all felt each others pain and helped each other out as much as possible. We were all mad and wanted to do something about it. Unfortunately, it became what it is today- WAR. It might have not lasted long but it was a tiny look of what America could have continued to be just like the 60s when everyone acted like we were brothers and sisters and it was our duty to love each other and keep it that way. There might have been no peace after 9/11 because everyone was so scared but it was a bit of a "hippy moment." Some may disagree but that's just that I think. How about you?
You could say the same about hirricane katrina as well. There were alot of people who volunteered and went down to clean up the big easy.
Most of the good sides of the hippie movement also came out of reaction to the Vietnam war and seeing black protesters be beaten by police. The darkest things usually show us whats important. It's a shame very little else will motivate people like that.
Yea, that's probably true. Unfortunately, it was probably one of the few times that people in New York actually expended the energy to be nice to each other. Too bad it can't be that way everyday.
Nah, it was more of an "emo" moment. Ya know, since everyone was all emotional and shit. Also, you know those suicide hijackers probably listened to lots of Elliot Smith.
I have no idea who Elliot Smith is. LOL! Well, Hurricane Katrina could also be a good example and it is very sad that it takes horrible tragedies to make people come together as one. Does anyone see hope for the future of humanity?
Eh, people can change. Look at the idiot in the segregation thread. 60 years ago that was normal, now about everyone realises how horrific segregation was. But it doesn't happen at the pace anyone would hope. Never forget that there are still lots of people who need help, and if you help them, you're also helping change.
Well, I don't think so. In the 60s people did it because of their ideas, not out of fear being spread by the government about terrorists, when the whole operation was conducted by them to begin with.
"We are here to make a better world. No amount of rationalization or blaming can preempt the moment of choice each of us brings to our situation here on this planet. The lesson of the '60s is that people who cared enough to do right could change history. We didn't end racism but we ended legal segregation. We ended the idea that you could send half-a-million soldiers around the world to fight a war that people do not support. We ended the idea that women are second-class citizens. We made the environment an issue that couldn't be avoided. The big battles that we won cannot be reversed. We were young, self-righteous, reckless, hypocritical, brave, silly, headstrong and scared half to death. And we were right." Abbie Hoffman As Humans we are at our best when things are at their worst. Yes, it was nice to see others giving a shit about one another but it will take some work for everyone to get even close to what it was like years ago. First of all a big part of it was what we got high on and fed our heads. It was mostly pot and psychedelics. Drinking was maybe wine and we did not fuel corporate America by buying Booze or wearing clothes that had company logos. We made our own which were mostly tye dye. Over a half million of us were at Woodstock and there was no fights since no one was drunk and trying to burn the place down. Try putting that many people today in the heat-rain- and mud and see what happens if they are drunk. So a lot of what we live is what we think. The music also carried another message and it wasn't I fucked your sister and your mother is a nigga. The message in today's music combined with the huge alcohol problem is what creates the violent I don't give a shit about anyone but what ring tone I have on my cell and what car I'm driving so I look like a gansta or Tony Soprano. So A lot will have to shift before you ever see a constant flow of peace and love and everyone giving a shit about one another. What will make that happen is a draft that is sure as shit coming no matter what some of you think on here and we have gone around and around on that issue many times. But the military recruiters are in my daughter high school lunch room chatting up kids to go join up and get to play a REAL Video game where you actually kill REAL people. So when our cattle rancher of a fucking leader seals our last boarder and fences in all you young folks of draft age. Your going to see some civil war and a revolution in this country that has never been seen before. In the end we will take back this place we call the USA and make it something that if you live here people in other countries will not spit on us. They are pretty right in how they feel about us as Americans. Our country sucks and it is run by gangsters and sadly most of the youth of today all aspire to being just that fucking gangsters. So what we think we create and that must change soon. We all have a lot of work to do and changing our minds FIRST will change our world. So think about feeding your head. Turn On-tune In and Drop Out. Peace The Wiz
But the 60's counterculture was NEVER a grassroots movement by the people, as many believe. No movement that gains national or international attention are ever grassroots.
wizarddrew77, I live in the ghetto and it's sad to go outside everyday and see people, mostly the "gangsters" and their "bitches" walking around doing nothing and that that is the future of the community. This might exist in a lot of other places so it's sad to know that that is what is happening in the US and probably might spread to other contries. I have a question. If this is not the place to post it please tell me and I'll post it some place else before anyone responds to it. Does anyone here think that once Bush leaves office, maybe the US will be a better place to live?
Bullshit. 9/11 was an excuse for a bunch of contemptuos middle class prudes to hate, to fear, and to confuse the fuck out of themselves.
I know what you mean but i disagree. To say it was NEVER a grassroots movement is a huge overstatement.
It might be a better place if the whole Republican apparatus gets replaced by something that really opposes it, and wants to see something better and more humane happen to the country. I'm afraid I don't see that happening, though. Today's Democrats are pretty much cut out of the same cloth that the Republicans are.
Meaning that things can only get worse? *crosses fingers and start mumbling "hope she says no" over and over*
