My dreads are a few months old now, and I'm thinking about colouring them before my vacation in a few weeks. Possibly.

    Questions ...

    * Can I use normal hair dye? If not, what do I use/where do I get it? (I'm in the Uk)

    * Do I use the same process as I would for normal hair (ie. dye it, leave it for 30 mins and wash out)?

    * Is it going to damage my dreads at all, or is there anything i should watch out for?

    Thanks :D

Ps. Here's my dreadies (pic is a couple months old - they're tighter now and have beads!)

Your dreads look awesome! Me likey... As for dye and stuff.... I would use a more concentrated form of dye, just so that I would be sure that it would saturate the dread... what color(s) are you thinkin' about?

The plan is to leave around a third of them the colour they are now (blonde-ish) and dye the others red and black in equal amounts, so would end up with a red, blonde and black head! :p

But obviously with my dreadies being only a few months old I don't want to risk damaging them, which is why I want to do them properly, so any help/advice would be great!

You do realise that dreads are only knotted hair, and even is you some how manage to loosen them or dry them out by coloring them, they will eventualy knot up again, and be dreads.

You'd probobly just need to put more dye on your hair than a normal head of hair would need, and soak them in the little plastic bag thing you get with the dye for your head a bit longer.

You can dye dreads in the same way you would dye any other hair. Just make sure you coat the dreads thoroughly in dye so you don't miss patches, no need to leave any longer than it says on the instructions (infact I would dissuade you from leaving any longer as dye can do nasty things to hair if left on too long). Have you tried using Henna to dye? Depending on what colour you want it can be a much kinder way of dying your hair.
