I didn't mean he was 'new,' I'm just saying not enough people know about him; he's my favorite living guitarist. Everybody I mention him to just says kiwho? kiwhat? A band is new to a person if they're relatively unknown. An unknown that comes to mind for improv that is sick is danny gatton's redneck jazz explosion. A newer band that is good in my area is the brew. They're still pretty young (early 20s) but are doing good for their age IMO. Got one of their studio cd's recently, and dl'd a live show.

YES - I love kimock and SKB. Rodney Holmes is amazing. I would also recommend checking out Jacob Fred Jazz Odyssey (also not a new band, but I would put this in the "check this out" catagory)

DAmn I wish more people gave JFJO a shot.
I remember when they were a 7-piece party band in Oklahoma playing the Deli in Norman.
I like the trio. They can be too much for me!
My hubby coined "Fredhead," which Richard Hass ran with on the e-mail list (in the late 90s). We used to sell dyes at their shows.
and we are responsible for the traveling wheatgrass show.
Like the Dead Kenny Gs, too.

next someone should get this guy a good agent entry:
    Fareed Haque.

I hear a lot of buzz on Green Lemon. No one had decided I NEED to see them yet, and I'm working a lot, so fewer shows.
Fareed Haque is part of Garaj Mahal (with former KVHW drumer Alan Hertz.) he teaches at Northern illinois Uni, as well.
He's an absolute stage slut: just did Banyan.
Wrote a very impressive and clean concerto for Zakir Hussein last winter.

How about the juggling suns, they are one of my favorite jambands and even though they are not a new band, a lot of people have never heard of them. Wether they are doing dead covers or original music, you'll love every minute of it.

yeah im not sure if theyre at that point yet, or if they ever will be. they seem to take it fairly serious, but still have fun on stage. they carry alot of equipment too . .. . if they grow in the right direction it should be some fun.

They are based 30 miles from me and I have yet to see them. Think they'll go beyond third tier festies?
Look at what happened to LoS...

its up to them. definately talented, but lacking in the direction department. but they look young . .. i dunno, they might not be quite past laughing at eachothers farts yet, im not sure. they may or may not have it.
they definately arent filler music, when i go to a festival theres usually only 2 or 3 or 4 shows i wanna see. now i guess theres a chance to be a 5th. thats a good thing.

if someone is too old to laugh at a band members fart, the heart and soul of that band is dead.

my 14 yo son is beyond fart jokes...and into things like music and rearranging the US political system so that it runs more efficiently and provides a truly wonderful nation...

so, if a band is that shallow (as to be into fart jokes in public), I think I'm an infrequent guest.
there are so many young bands out there with a message WITH astonishing music. Why waste time with sub par?

But the comment was that they were green, no so much as young, and some bands take a while to grow up.

this week's new check 'em out is:
    TAARKA
    www.taarka.com

David Tiller - Mandolins, tenor guitar ("It's a big mandolin," DT said)
    Enion Pelta Tiller - Violins
Jason Flores - Upright Bass, electric bass
Dale Largent - Drums & Percussion

promoted as Gypsy Jazz, this is really a world beat group with a strong taste of Latcho Drom.
this is a hard working bunch, Taarka is a project, all members have other bands (Tha Musement, Vagabond Opera, Coyo) but you will see them in POrtland, Ore., and along the West coast with raids to the wild interior.
if you are tired of the trie but true hippy jam band, ge see Taarka.
Tour dates include a FREE show Aug. 22 in Santa Fe opening for Junior Brown (bandstand on the plaza) and a FREE show in Grover Beach Calif., at stone soup World Music festival.

I first saw Taarka as a duo at High Sierra, never saw the Jared from Hanuman line up, then was listening to the Willamette Valley folk festival in 2002 online and they blew me away, not knowing who it was (working at the time and missed the intro)

    REVOLUTIONARY SIDE-EFFECTS [rse]

these guys are awesome! Based out of Northern Los Angeles, these guys are amazing. A three peice band, JOSH BALDWIN (Drums & Percussion) MIKE BLUMBERG (Guitars, Vocals & Sampling) And on the Bass: The one and only ANTHONY ROGERS-WRIGHT (Bass, Vocals, Loops)......RSE is tight and groovin. and their jams are actually jams! unlike the recent fad of "processed" jamming. check them out at

    www.myspace.com/revolutionarysideeffects

they will be embarking on their first East Coast tour, check them out if you live out there!!!

and as the boys of RSE always say

    "LIVE MUSIC LIVES"
