No one knows all I know is its not a choice, I think its genetics , or maybe genetics and environmental, i doubt its singularly environmental.

I used to think genetics but now I'm more leaning towards environmental influence...but what exactly the factors of an environment are that make one homosexual are still unknown/sketchy ideas. I wanted to do a biology project on this once, but my teacher wouldn't let me on account of lack of convincing data...so no one can really go much beyond speculation.

 

yeah but environmental alone just makes no sense to me, I mean I do all "masculine" things im just more open to admitting i like plays and romance movies than other guys and to being sensitive. I dont like any "feminine" things like fashion or what not and I was not raised with an overdominant mother, and have a very "macho" dad. So why am I gay?

 

the thing is it fits very well for me, my mother was very dominant and my father though not absent was distant.
i just have to remember it doesn't explain it for everyone!

Yeah I have a ton of memories growing up of hanging out with my sister and her friends...and always was emotionally closer to my mom, seeing as my dad was at work most of the day. So perhaps thats influenced me...but my thought is that there are environmental factors that aren't quite as obvious as feminine dominance in our lives, things we wouldn't even think of and that would seem minimally effective to our mental development.

I dont think it really matters though as long as everyone can agree it isnt a choice and most people do now, and that its not because we had fucked up childhoods or because we were raped. I know my childhood was fine and i was never touched in a bad way. Plus theres plenty of straight people who get raped and remain straight more so than gay so that theory makes no sense.

 

Although you may be correct, molestation seems like a good reason of why people turn out gay. I was molested at the age of 11 and have been gay since. I think it might of had to do with being shown sexual pleasures via a penis at such a early age, at the beginning of puberty. I still have a feeling this is why I am gay but people have been telling me it probably isn't.

 

There are so many different kinds of gay men that it's difficult to say that any one thing causes homosexuality. Scientists have considered whether a person is an only child, middle child or youngest child, what sort of parents you had, genetic factors, early life experiences and on and on.

My best guess (and it's just a guess) is that some things may make a person more or less likely to be gay, but these things don't necessarily cause a person to be gay. You probably get so many points for your home life, so many points for experiences, and you're born with so many other points. If you hit a magic number, you'll end up gay.

There are also many ways of being gay. Some gay men tend toward longterm relationships, while others tend to avoid settling down. Some men are very butch, while others aren't. Some men are attracted to one very narrow range of other men, and others have broader tastes. Of course, you could say pretty much the same thing about heterosexual and bisexual men.

In other words, there is no simple answer to the question, and I don't think we'll come up with an answer that satisfies everyone.

 

In my opinion, someone just doesn't start out gay. This is my opinon, but i think of it as someone starts out as a clean slate, as in they don't have a sexuality, gay or straight, and as they get to the teens, there envoriment sways them one way or the other. Its not a choice such as one day a person wants to be straight or gay.

seriously though, I fully believe I was born this way. as far back as I can remember I always enjoyed being with my male friends much more than the girls. after puberty I knew I wanted more than just "being friends and hanging out" with my male friends, I wanted to get close in a physical way.

Ok here it goes.

I d like to start by first telling I am not gay. Depsite that I have nothing against gays or lesbians and I see no reason to see homosexuals as any different people than heterosexuals.

Besides I view homosexuality as a natural phenomenon.

The purpose of my visit here though and of this thread is to discuss about the possible influences that determined your orientation since I d like to hear directly from you, than just read articles of people that dont live like you.

I had a discussion with my godfather recently about this, and I share the opinion that there are various influences. They can be biological, physiological, enviromental, or psychological(the structure of a person's psychiosynthesis). It can be a combination of all or some of these according to my opinion.

Where I d disagree with my godfather is that he claims that all gays just choose to have sex with the same gender just like that, the same way as someone chooses some food over another and the only reason theories about other possible influences exist, is only because the ruling class wants to put gays in a different class of people, or gays use these because they are scared and want to find an excuse for their preference. (btw he has nothing against gays. As a socialist he accepts and respects your choice as I do)

I agree that some only chose their sexual orientation just like that, and I also agree that some gays are scared because in this society they arent easily accepted and thus they will use them to be accepted.

But I disagree that there are no combinations of biological, physiological, psycholsynthetical, and enviromental influences that form a person's sexual orientation at all because I know that atleast from personal experience I feel no sexual attraction towards the same gender (actually I do feel a little rarely in regards to sensuality), because I wasnt developed physiologically/biologically that way.

When I was entering puberty and an unexplained sexual desire started to emerge of which I had no control of, it wasnt my decision that it was directed towards the opposite gender. It was the nature of my body and personality formed by these various influences.

So what's your opinions and personal experienfces on this?

I believe it could be just genetics but it also could be environmental to but i dont understand what couldve environmentally effected me into being gay. one this for sure is its not a choice..the only choice is whether or not you want to be happy or not

yeah this does make sense, the only question I would ask is are you comfortable with your sexuality, have you moved beyond the fact that you feel it has started through the molestation?
also there are many many gay men who haven't been molested, I think this needs to be made clear, or people will again jump on the bandwagon about why it is unnaturel and wrong, because they would state every case started as a result of being assaulted

i think the majority HAVNT been molested by a ton though....thats just like saying molestation causes people to be straight.....theres no scientific correlation but more straight people have been molested than gay people im sure by alot.
