Are they vegan? I heard somewhere that they are not... But I see hydrogenated oils in like every type of peanut butter [im addicted to peanut butter] and I never thought this wasn't vegan... ??? I know they aren't good for you, lol, but I'm really only concerned of whether it's vegan or not.
The peanut butter I get is only Peanuts and Salt. No hydrogentated oils. Try a different brand. As far as being vegan-I would think it would have to do with what kind of fat was hyrogentated.
I'd imagine hydrogenated oils are vegan.... but don't eat them! There terribly unhealthy, and are in the process of being banned over most of western europe.
Partially hydrogenated = Trans fat. These are fatty acids that have a high percentage of hydrogen bonds (hence, partially hydrogenated) within the carbon chain. I'm guess'n fully hydrogenated oils would be the same, just worse?? Just like natural ingredients, mono and di glycerides, etc, they can be plant or animal based. Typically, various types of peanut butters like Jiff & Peter Pan use vegetable oils, as I have yet to find a brand that uses lard or animal fats. As always, it would be best to check with the company for a more definite answer if you're not 100% sure. Is there a product in general you're referring to?
check out smucker's natural and some of the Kroger chain stores (King Soopers here in Colorado) have a natural peanut butter. then the HFS brands: Adams, Maranatha, etc, etc.
Thanks everyone, very helpful. I was using Jif regular creamy peanut butter before, when I noticed that. Since then, I have been experimenting with different natural peanut butters that don't contain those oils, because I was trying to avoid them.... however, I'm having trouble finding one I like. Some of them taste alright but separate easily, and is very hard to stir up with my weak little arms. The ones that seem to stay blended well, have little to no flavor at all, or taste almost way too salty. I haven't tried the Smucker's one yet, drumminmama so maybe I'll give that a whirl....I love their jelly!
Def post if you find one thats worth trying, I personally never cared for any of the organic stuff. Sometimes, nothing beats an old style PB&J.
