In LA, a poverty-stricken popluation's 14-acre urban garden, also known as "The Farm", is about to be shut down and all its residents of the 360 plots will be evicted. This may not seem like such a huge issue, especially if you don't live in California (I live in NJ), but it really is for the residents of The Farm. Their garden is all they have to rely on for food, resources, and also culture, and the property also provides other benefits for the city of LA. The man who wants to shut down the farm wants to replace the whole land area with industrial buildings, and also at the same time is buying the farm at an unfair price from the public. Please go to the website below to read updates on The Farm, and also click on a link or two that will better explain the significance of the situation. You can help out The Farm by sending an email to government officials of the LA area that are allowing this all to go on. Or, you could be even more generous and send The Farm's population some money. Anyway you can help would be wonderful. http://www.southcentralfarmers.com/
This isn't just a California issue, it's a national issue. We all need to stand up for the preservation of our country's farmlands, especially in urban areas were development is a constant threat. Urban farms are rare and are under constant attack by greedy developers who want to destroy them for personal gain. So we all need to do whatever we can to help our farmers, whether they be rural or urban.
I heard about this when Darryl Hannah was arrested for protesting at the farm. the owner of the property sounds like a real ass.
Julia Butterfly Hill went on a hunger strike as she sat in one of the trees...I think Joan Baez joined her for a short bit. It's funny you don't hear about this on national news...Hmm, wonder why?
I posted something about this months ago when the big issues first started for the farm. At that time, no one seemed to care.
