    not permed dreads.

backcombed, rip and tear, etc are natural by definition (no chemicals to cause the dreads). but when most people refer to "natural dreads" they mean the "i dont do my hair at all" approach.

naturals are where u just leave your haior alone to knott up, only washing them. when the hair starts knotting up, ripping them apart to form dreads rather then one big one!

Rumor: Natural dreads are those that are made by neglect.
Fact: There are two types of natural dreadlocks. Those that are required by religion to be natural, and natural for you or I, which means non-chemically processed dreads.
If you are rastafarian or in some sects of middle eastern religions you are required to not interfere with the growth of your dreads. You have probably not seen many truly natural dreads as most of these religions also require that no one, not even your spouse in some cases, see your dreads. These truly natural dreads can be washed but they can not be cut trimmed or ripped in any way and no combing or products can be used to maintain them.

The second type of natural are those dreads that came to be without the use of any chemical proccesses. You can wash them, cut them, comb them, rip them, tie them and wax them as you like but they are started and grow naturally without any chemical dread perms or synthetic additions. This is what is commonly thought of as natural and what we reffer to throughout the site. All methods listed in our methods section are natural methods except for the dread perm. We belive that dreads should be natural and only natural products and methods should be used to care for them.

no offence, but when people argue over whether or not backcombing is natural or even dreads at all, i have to wonder who's more closed minded.. the corporate world that wont hire dreadheads, or people with dreads. dreads are dreads, as i see it. i personally think they look best all natural, but i have a great love and appreciation for anyone who's living the lifestyle of a dreadie.

i dunno i stopped classing lots of drads and natural or not.. i class mine as pretty natural these days. i ripped them to start with 2 and a half years ago.. but ive not done anything to them since really... and they unraveled and re formed.... so to me mine are quite natural....

but to someone else.. they wont be.

    i dont know really...

..to me if dreads are natural to someone.. then they are part of their soul rather than a hair style. doesnt really matter how they started them. (though personally i dont like the look of the overly waxed/croched/twisted/preened dreads)

I backcombed mine and left them to go natural they came out fine....
I just think it's easier to backcomb then natural instead of riping ur hair...so your dreads are sectioned already.

oh but with the neglect, its so much more of a journey, to me at least, this is just my personal opinion. i had backcombed dreads, and i loved them, but this time around, im natural, and its just so much more, i dunno, im more in touch with it i guess. i mean i wake up in the morning and the first thing i do is feel my head for new babies, its awsome!!!!

I am just starting dreads and as my hair in knotting up, I do the exact same thing. The first think I do in the morning is feel for any new knots.

i would classify anything other than salon dread perms or whatever they do with them natural. i don't see anything wrong with backcombing them, some people with very straight, thin hair have a really hard time getting their hair to lock without atleast some initial backcombing.
