So after a number of years and 10 straight months of being sick in a row I think I'm going to have my tonsils removed. I've heard it's a ton worse getting it done when you're not a child (I'm almost 23) so I'd love to hear some stories to know what I'm in for. Thanks!

you know, removing the tonsils has not been proven to be effective for most people with recurring sore throats and ear infections, and there is some evidence that it could hurt your immune system overall. If I were you, I'd do some serious research before agreeing to have a part of my body surgically removed, as the studies on both sides of the issue are controversial. Read the evidence and come to your own conclusions based on your unique situation. www.pubmed.com would be a good place to start looking. Your tonsils probably aren't making you sick, but having a weakened immune system would make you more susceptible to the germs that are.

Personally, removing a body part because it keeps getting infected doesn't make good sense to me. Would you remove your big toe if you kept getting ingrown tonails? Would you cut off your foot because you repeatedly sprained your ankle? Or would you try to find the root cause of the problem and treat that instead of only addressing the most obvious symptoms?

    Thanks for your info.

It's not something I just decided to do spur of the moment, but something that my doctor has repeatedly suggested. I'm sick at least once a month with severe tonsillitis and fever and I'm missing a ton of work because of it. If there was any other alternative I would love to try it-I really don't want to have anything removed.

My doctor suggested tonsillectomy for me because I was getting ear infections and colds constantly. I had it done last March. I've had two ear infections and a cold since. :p So two weeks of throwing up blood and being in pain really weren't worth it. For me anyway.

I hope you have better luck if you do decide to get your tonsils removed!!

they kept telling me to have my tonsils and adenoids removed too. Doctors aren't always right. Really, look it up and see what the chances are of it actually making a difference for you. I got rid of the chronic ear and sinus infections by addressing the food allergy (dairy) that was causing them instead.

the chances are it is the water you are drinking or you are being exposed to germs on a regular basis.
avoid using public transport if you can - walk. try taking jobs that limit your exposure to people (don't work in places like airports!!!).
despite water being treated i have long suspected from anaecdotal evidence that water supplies are not clean. in australia, in sydney there was a breakout of a waterborne disease resistant to chlorine coming through the taps - sydney water were forced to tell people this because people were getting sick. the cure ? either everyone had to boil their drinking water or sydney water had to re employ the man who dragged the animal carcasses out of the drinking water supplies (in their infinite wisdom they had decided that the man who went with his dog around the waters edge and dragged out the dead wasn't needed any more).
avoid pubs/clubs, they are a hive of infection, from the glasses you drink from to the hot air blowers that throw moist, germ laden air around.
    remove the point of contact.
