Has anyone else found that they play any musical instrument better when they're really high? I've been learning Johann Pachelbel's Canon in D minor for piano for like 2 months now, and I just recently played when I was baked (first time trying to play the song high) and I actually made it through the entire piece without messing up, which I always do (mess up, that is)......so, just for consistency checking, I played In the Hall of the Mountain King right afterwards, still high, and played it without messing up too.......it was cool......

I may take that up sometime. I think if I were to learn an instrument it would have to be the drums though. Sometimes I catch myself just drumming on shit with my hands and it sounds nice. I have been told I have good rythm for drumming.

In some ways it's better to play baked, and in some not. I've been playing guitar for a pretty long time now and I really enjoy playing when I'm high as well. It feels like you can just be more care-free about you playing, just kinda doing your thing and you get really into your music and you feel really good (Not that it can't be like that sober, but it just happens easier and faster to come when high). Jamming with a band when everyone is blazed is really fun, especially when you all have a good connection to begin with.

Some negative things I've noticed is it's hard for some people to learn things on instruments when they are high, though I don't have much of a problem with that because I've actually learned scales and stuff when high and remembered them perfectly later. But I guess you could lose your concentration if you are trying to do a song and it's very specific at part on things you need to do.

It depends. If I'm just high then I play great especially when I'm improvising on a percussion instrument. But if I mix weed and alcohol so I'm drunk and high, my sense of rhythm gets all fucked up.

i tried guitar a long time ago...wasn't too fascinated by it.....it's just not my thing.....but my little brother's been playing guitar for a few years, and he's gotten really good. I've been playing piano since I was 8, and still have a hard time learning some things, but my bro's only been playing for like 3 years, and can play stuff that sounds really difficult to do.....I think an other instrument that would be fun to play stoned is the drums, but not like those snare drums and super-fast beats of like punk music, more like the drum beats for Cherry Poppin' Daddies. I guess a jazzy, bouncy style....I like it.....

I play drums and guitar almost religiously and in my experience... I'd say that rythm and improv is super enhanced, but learning new songs isn't very easy. I love drumming when I'm stoned. And TopNotch- Get a djembe or something if you really feel like taking up drumming and don't want a set :)... so awesome when you're high

I may have to do that. Right now I just pound my hands/knuckles on tables, one hand close to the edge and one hand more toward the middle to get different acoustics.

This isnt true for me. I play drums and guitar and I cant play either worth a shit when I'm stoned. With drums I like to play like Mitch Mitchell, quick fills on the toms, lots of snare/bass/hi-hat/ride cymbal stuff (think of the drums on Hendrix's "Fire") which requires alot of coordination, which just isnt there when I'm stoned. It depends on the music, I can do chords, basic rythym, basic beats but what I usually play is more lead guitar blues-rock stuff on guitar, like Clapton's playing with John Mayall's Bluesbreakers/Cream. The only drug that heightens my playing is caffiene, it helps me stay more focused and play faster.

If i'm not mistaken caffeine actually decreases the accuraccy of your internal metronome, making you rush, or play faster as you put it. Most musicians would not consider that a good thing. I would definately agree with you on the focus increase though. Ganja on the other hand, is definately beneficial to musicianship, and all things creative imo.

its true that ganja allows you to explore the techniques you know to apply them lucidly. learning new techniques is harder because youre in a mode of using your techniques when stoned, to make novel sounds, whereas when sober its more your in the mode of having sounds to make, and piecing together the appropriate techniques. when stoned, its like exploring all the things you know and making sounds with them.

so if you know a lot of basics on a functional level, playing music can be easy and fun. if you think of music in a more structured, systematic level, then its sorta like thinking 'what chord is meant to come next? this one' but when stoned its like 'the next chord is this one' but because you dopnt step back as easily in the moment, if something fucks up, you cant work out where youre meant to go back to. however, when stoned, its easier to make a mistake and then pick backupt by stopping and listening to the sound and feeling where its gonna go next, and taking it there.

in terms of metronome, weed can be a problem if youre totally relying on your own metronome - if you have a beat or other music to work around however, you can fit it in appropriately at each moment.

its pretty complex really, but it all depends on how each person has learnt their musical ability, which tools of the mind are primarily being used.

so, for example, with a bach piece, youve played it and played it, each time storing in your mind whats meant to happen. but when playing it, perhaps youre stopping and thinking about what youre meant to do next. but then you get stoned, and since the notes to play are all there in your head, its a matter of piecing them together in the moment. you dont have to worry about what note comes next caus you already know, youre more focussed on -how- youre playing The Notes.

    i hope that makes sense.

    study sober, play stoned
