Hey, My mom and I are thinking about starting a vegetarian and vegan resturant and I was wondering if anyone that owns a resturant might have advice about running one . My mom had her own resturant b4 but I want to see diffrent point of veiws and oppions. Also if any veggies wanna comment about what they would like to see in a veggie resturant or what kind of recipes they like ... please feel free to drop a line Thanks peace <3 Katy
i have a friend who runs a natural food restaurant. the best avice for that i know is have a big selection of food. most non-veggies and even some veggies are a bit intimidated at veggie restaurants because theyre afraid of food that theyre not familiar with. somake sure theres always a few options for those less likely to try new things like veggie burgers or fruit smoothies or even creative salads. thats all i can think of now, good luck to you.
I know that if I go to veggie restaurants with non-veggies...they shy away from soy products...so make sure there is lots of fun food without soy products as well as with.
Hey there... I don't really know but I know who would. There is a WONDERFUL veggie restraunt in my town called Earthen Jar, in ann arbor michigan. (we have other good ones too, but im pretty sure this one is just run by a girl and her mother.) its really small, in fact i think its a house, and they just have a hot bar everyday. Anyways check them out and do it because the world needs more of those little places.
I've only been veggie for two weeks this time around. But I really don't care for all those 'tastes just like meat" products. I don't want meat substitutes, I want real food prepared in wonderful creative combinations. So offer lots of real food, not soy, tofu, tempeh type stuff. Kathi
The veggie resturant in this town does good breakfast buisness with a fried potatoe based dish. The previous veggie resturant in town did similar breakfast trade with a similar dish called the "Workingman's Breakfast."
check out the menu at Watercourse in Denver. My onmi hubby calls it his fave restaurant. on the staying in business side, food costs need to be kept to 30-35 percent (including waste/spoilage) Assume that even if there is a no eating rule, the cooks will eat. so feed 'em. prices need to be close to the prevailing costs in "standard restaurants" with some flux for special ingredients (maybe compare to mid range, but offer a couple cheap to make cheap to serve items.) I'd also crawl Happy Cow and other sites that have reveiws: what turns people on, what turns people off?
There are plenty of good ideas out there. I know everyone here is discussing food, but what about other products? Like, soy wall paints etc? (If there even is such a thing?) I would make sure the entire restaurant is vegan. No fake leather immitation chairs either! Is it casual (Like a local coffee shop feel) or sit down fancy? Personally, as a veg*an, my personality would fit casual better. (Not saying that's true for everyone!) But, maybe a lot of veg*ans would like to see bright colorful stuff that is harmonious with the earth and soul! (This IS assuming finances allow. Being vegan can get costly when you add up home decor things!) But, give the restaurant a free feeling. Some jazzy music playing softly, nice gentle lighting in one area. PLENTY of reading material as well. (I'm picturing couches and bean bag chairs with coffee tables, I could be way off from your ideas so...) I really like the way Panera looks! Anyway, hope this helps with decor, if you WERE only looking for food ideas, I still hope this helps!
Some of us with middle aged knees would appreciate an alternative to bean bags. And some way to sit with our more flexible friends. If you are opening a openly vegan resturant, its the food not the decor that will draw the customers.
Ooh and go here and check the veggie box and it has lots of ideas http://sainsburys.co.uk/food/recipe/default.htm?WT.svl=1&WT.seg_1=nav_primary
Wow Iam soo thrilled that everyone commented with great advice .... I will definitly discuss all your great advice with my mom !! ... thank you soo much !! If anyone had more advice feel free to drop a line Peace<3 Katy
on the look: be welcoming and have a community bulletin board. Have a limit on how many of a flier can be posted and have a date written on them, the day they went up or an "event expiration" date. allow cards to sort of do what they'll do. Many, many restaurants I've seen in veggieland have been thriftshop and garage sale mish mash. Paint makes all the difference. Low VOP paint is PRICEY, but you could see when places have drop and swaps or haz mat pick ups that allow you to grab someone else's leftover paint. Plan of a few spaces for those who cannot be in bean bags (and plan for wheelchair access to boot) Local artists can do your walls. maybe one static piece/ mural and a rotating display? out front, provide dog water (and a jar of treats that you can sell cheap (25 cents) or even give away..think fido peppermints ... at the register)
You have some awesome ideas drumminmama... I was thinking about allowing barefooters too ... but the thing is I dont want people sewing me if they step on glass or somthing like that ... or peolpe that might just try to screw my mom and I over because there money hungry ... I can put a sign up barefooter s welcome but becareful or enter at your own risk .. I also was thinking about giving out little leaflits talking about becoming a veg for those that arent veggies ... And other things like that ...
Where in PA will this place be? we need more veggie resturants! I like imitation meats if they are cooked right. Try a bunch of different imatation meat platters. I enjoy eatting that type of stuff.
Don't use Boca. I absolutely hate boca and it drives me mad whenever a restaurant has a vegetarian burger it is almost always boca!!! I personally LOVE morning star farms anything, steak strips, chik'n strips, griller crumbles (i use these with a box of fantastic vegetarian chili mix and it is just DEVINE), and everything else they make. Maybe have a buffet so people can try everything becuase it is alittle intimidating buying something you may of never tried or heard of before.
And I adore Boca's vegan burgers-yum. This is a wonderful opportunity to offer real, whole foods that are tasty and packed with nutrition. Good for you.
