Nonsense. Unlike ruminants we only have one stomach instead of several, the one stomach that humans have produces strong hydrochloric acid ie pH2 that does not happen in the case of ruminants. The alimentary canal aka intestinal tract, although longer than that of carnivores,is shorter that that of ruminants.

PS have you been reading any of Jane Brody's syndicated claptrap? Check this link.

i dont eat meat becuse of the huge gluttony of the meat corporations. they kill in excess, and dont use all of the animal. they dont honor the animal. and they kill with no effort.

and ive never met one vegitarian who thought they were "holier than thou"

Weston A price might have been on a good track but teh foundation is treading close to meat advocacy. I regard it as off base as PETA.

That article I put a link into was originally published The Progressive magazine, http://www.progressive.org/

Barbara Ehrenreich has certainly got an refreshing style of writing, would you not say? I just put the Weston A price version up because it does not have adverts around the article like original online one has. WestonA Price is not pro meat per se, but pro whole foods. They make the point that a vegetarian diet is healthy for some people, but not for everyone. However they consider a vegan diet to be unhealthy.

I dont understand why your calling vegetarians annoyingly arrogant and hypocritical the fact is you dont know any of us to call us that. Plants dont bleed or cry when your picking it. Plants also dont feel like ALL animals do. Thats including fish .
Fish on aquafarms spend their entire lives in cramped, filthy enclosures, and many suffer from parasitic infections, diseases, and debilitating injuries. 40 percent of the fish may die before farmers can kill and package them for food.Turkeys’ beaks and toes are burned off with a hot blade. Many suffer heart failure or debilitating leg pain, often becoming crippled under the weight of their genetically manipulated and drugged bodies.Mother pigs on factory farms are confined to crates so small that they are unable to turn around or even lie down comfortably.Cows used for their milk are drugged and bred to produce unnatural amounts of milk; they have their babies stolen from them shortly after birth and sent to notoriously cruel veal farms so that humans can drink the calves’ milk.Cattle are castrated, their horns are ripped out of their heads, and third-degree burns (branding) are inflicted on them, all without any pain relief.Hens used for eggs live six or seven to a battery cage the size of a file drawer, thousands of which are stacked tier upon tier in huge, filthy warehouses.Chickens killed for their flesh in the United States are bred and drugged to grow so quickly that their hearts, lungs, and limbs often can’t keep up. More than 70 percent of the grains and cereals we grow go to farmed animals.80 percent of the agricultural land in the United States are used to raise animals for food.Farmed animals produce about 130 times as much excrement as the entire human population of the United States, and since factory farms don't have sewage treatment systems as our cities and towns do, this concentrated slop ends up polluting our water, destroying our topsoil, and contaminating our air. Meat-eaters are responsible for the production of 100 percent of this waste-about 86,000 pounds per second.About 20 percent of the world's population, or 1.4 billion people, could be fed with the grain and soybeans fed to U.S. cattle alone. It takes up to 16 pounds of grain to produce just one pound of meat, and even fish on fish farms must be fed 5 pounds of wild-caught fish to produce one pound of farmed fish flesh. It takes 2,500 gallons of water to produce 1 pound of meat, while growing 1 pound of wheat only requires 25 gallons. A totally vegetarian diet requires only 300 gallons of water per day, while a meat-eating diet requires more than 4,000 gallons of water per day. You save more water by not eating a pound of beef than you do by not showering for an entire year. Chickens' beaks are sliced off with a hot blade, pigs' tails are chopped off and their teeth clipped with pliers, and male cows and pigs are castrated, all without any pain relief. The animals are confined to crowded, filthy warehouses and dosed with powerful drugs to make them grow so quickly that their hearts and limbs often cannot keep up—they frequently become crippled or suffer from heart attacks when they're only a few weeks old. Finally, at the slaughterhouse, they are hung upside-down and their throats are slit, often while they are still conscious. The billions of chickens, turkeys, pigs, and cows who are crammed into factory farms each year in the U.S. produce enormous amounts of methane, both in their digestive processes and from the feces that they excrete. Scientists report that every molecule of methane is more than 20 times as effective as carbon dioxide is at trapping heat in our atmosphere. Animals raised for food produce 68,000 pounds of waste per second. A pig farm with 5,000 animals produces as much fecal waste as a city of 50,000 people. All that is only scraping the top of the reasons why many people and I are vegetarians and Vegans. We care about the enviornment,Animals, and ourselves and its emportant. Instead of going off making jugdemental statements you should ask your self what do you stand for
We all should except eatchother for who we are and except that we are all diffrent and thats what makes the world so interesting.

I'm sorry that you've had some bad experiences with vegetarians. Most are not holier than thou, but yes we like sharing our lifestyle, mostly because when you come across something good, you want to share it. I became vegetarian after my first Rainbow Gathering 2 years ago. I did it for many reasons: health (meat is acidic and the over-use of it leads to heart disease, cancer, and many other diseases), the environment (it takes MUCH less energy and resources and produces less waste to eat plants directly rather than raising plants to feed animals and then eating the animals), and ethics (I don't want to eat or cause suffering to sentient beings and our farming industry leads to starvation in the third world). It's a personal choice, but maybe it doesn't work for everyone. But it's definitely a more sustainable lifestyle and in my opinion, a more compassionate one. Especially because factory farming is the most polluting (and one of the most cruel) industry, why support that? I like knowing where my food came from and what went into it, which is why I only eat organic and try to eat locally-grown food. Funny, but I haven't been sick since going vegetarian. Best decision I ever made. :)

If you're interested in learning more, try reading Diet for a Small Planet, Diet for a New America, or visit GoVeg.com. And try not to stereotype vegetarians as being "holier-than-thou" ... hopefully you'll approach us with an open mind, and hopefully vegetarians can find a way to share information and the benefits of our lifestyle without being condescending. Peace!

Could I see your scientific references please? I once read about meat being acidic. Using pH probe I tested beef that showed up as pH 6.5 (ie mildly acidic),nile perch pH6.8 ,chicken pH 7 (Ie neutral) and orange juice pH5. Remeber pH 5 is 100 time stronger than pH6.

Hey, I know I am new here and all, but let me say that I think we can all make our own decisions. I am vegetarian, my husband is not. It's cool. We all are our own people! We are a peaceful bunch, aren't we?

    HAHAHA that cracked me up!
but seriously, some people arent vegetarians just because they think its right, now in days, its healthier. yes, some plants have pesticides in them, but not if you buy usda approved organic. ever heard of mad cow disease? the bird flu? not to mention all the fat and crap in animals. many vegetables and fruits are known to fight and prevent many diseases and cancer, where as meat only causes constipation. the reason why many so-called 'vegetarians' eat fish is because its about the only meat out there thats good for you. (but fyi, fish IS an animal, so even if that is the only meat you eat, your still not a vegetarian)
as for the holier-than-thou attitude, when i first joined hippyland i was NOT a vegitarian. i never found any posts that told me off or made me feel like crap for eating meat. however, since becoming vegetarian, i have found MANY very angry non-vegetarian posts that try to make me feel like crap for not eating meat.
so ill tell you what many other vegetarians will tell you: if you want to eat meat, thats your choice. i wont roast you for your choice if you wont roast me for mine.

Then there's the thing with mercury in the fish. Local fish here sucks, because of the pollution! You should see the dead ones floating on Lake Erie! I try and watch the mercury in everything. I have 2 kids on the autism spectrum. I don't know for sure there is a link there, but it is a good speculation.

OK fair point, avoid eating lodal fish in your particular case. However you can still eat oily fish, bought tinned or frozen. Long chain essential fatty acids are good for brain function.
