American accents in British TV shows

Here's a question for American people...

I'm British, and whenever I watch an American TV show with British accents in, the accents always sound really weird. Yeah, I realise that many of them are fake British accents which explains why some of them are weird... but even the ones that I know are real British accents - they STILL sound really weird just because they're on an American show and my brain is kinda in "American" mode, so the accents sound kinda false and OTT and like stereotypes.

My question is, when American people are watching a British TV show and someone in it is American... do they also sound weird and fake and OTT and totally 'out of place'? Or doesn't it work that way around?

 

I think it sounds weird when a predominantly British show has people with American accents. But, I find it fascinating when British people do American accents, lol. Hugh Laurie as himself and as Dr. Gregory House are two completely different people altogether. Hugh's British and soft-spoken, but anyone who's watched House MD knows that House is loud, rude, and American. Haha. I was floored to see the difference between him and his character.

 

We don't really watch British TV shows. At least, I don't. No Offense.

 

I thought it was funny when I was watching this movie once that was dubbed. The actors were trying to speak American English and they sounded really gross lol. It sounded like people on the make.

 

I know Colin Ferrill is not English, but he nails an American accent.

 

when monty python members tried american accents, they sound all drawn out and weird....... they do it at half speed or something......

that one british dude that has his own talk show, does a pretty good american accent.

 

ive found that they use alot of irish people to do american accents on british tv...but i can always tell they're irish

 

I have never seen a brittish TV show that had an American accent in it...but I only seen Monty Python and Are you being served?

 

yeah, that one dude, who has his own talk show is irish, and he does a good american accent. what is his name?? I cant think of it...... its on nbc, I think.....

umm yeah he couldve been............ I have never watched drew carey that much. I cant remember if that was his boss or not......... probably was.

 

I love that dudes show..CBS, but as soon as I get cable again I wont remembe him atall
