this past christmas target has refused to allow the salvation army (the santa that stands outside with a bucket and a bell) to stand outside their store. (im not sure if its all targets, or just our target.) my mother and i now refuse to shop at their store! the excuse i heard was that the s. army "bothered the customers". bullspit! if your a huge corp and you won't donate yourself, at least let your customers! i urge you to boycot target! theyr too expensive and their shit sucks anyways!
The homeless have no money to spend and target is a corperation who are only loyal to their shareholders. Of course they hate the homeless. We have no target here in Canada as far as I know but I dont shop at walmart which is similar.
It was all Targets. It was really humbug assholish of them. I hardly ever shopped there before, but I don't think I've been in target since Christmas. I don't even know if it was a concious decision, just mild disgust by being in the store. Spitting on the Salvation Army didn't help.
it does bother me. from wikipedia: The Salvation Army in the USA has come under attack for what some people see as discrimination in hiring and for its requirements on how employees should behave. Despite the tax breaks it receives as a registered charity and its government funding (about 11 percent of total revenues, in the form of grants and payments for services), it has a stated policy of discrimination against applicants and employees whose faith or sexual orientation are not acceptable. The Army's position is that because it is a church, Section VII of the US Civil Rights Act of 1964 explicitly guarantees its rights to discriminate in hiring. In a recent case, the New York Federal Court ruled that organization could use religious criteria in its hiring; that ruling is being appealed by the New York Civil Liberties Union. Other issues in the lawsuit by 19 current and former employees are still under consideration by the trial court. The State of New York has proposed legislation that requires businesses to offer health benefits to same-sex partners of employees. The Salvation Army opposes this policy and has threatened to close its soup kitchens and shelters across New York. In July 2001, The Washington Post published a Salvation Army internal memo. According to that document, the Salvation Army and President George W. Bush made a deal: the Salvation Army would support Bush's push on faith based initiatives if Bush made sure that the Salvation Army would be exempt from local and state legislations that prevent discrimination based on sexual orientation. The leak created considerable amount of protest from the gay community and other liberal groups. [1] In December 2001, a Moscow court ruled that the Salvation Army was a paramilitary organization subject to expulsion. [2]
I understand the need for them to raise funds, etc. We as a family do things throughout the year to help the less fortunate and homeless in our area. But it does get rather irritating to go to the mall, grocery store, walmart, Lowes, you name it, during holiday time and have the ringing bell's all over. It seems as though all year long our wal-mart has some charity or another outside of BOTH of their doors asking for dontions for this or that...I don't like being bombarded by these groups walking in or out of the stores...isn't that customer harassment????
Yeah--religeous people are some of the most hypocritical folks around. The good thing about the S.A is that about 90 to 98 % of what is donated to them actually goes toward helping those in need.Whereas the other organizations pay their execs BIG bucks and a much smaller % goes to helping people.(did not look up the percentages).
Target has a company policy of not allowing anyone [Girl Scout cookie booths, political groups, Jehovah's Witnesses, Sal Army, etc.] to solicit, petition or anything out front of any stores. This certainly isn't a targetted policy. Target is oneof the better of the large corporations- not only do they treat their employees well and provide attainable benefits to them, but they also work to sponsor arts and educational initiatives in communities. Focus your hatred on Wal-Mart: http://walmartwatch.com/
Target isn't the worst corp. out there. Even the lowest entry level Target employees are payed above minimun wage and Target was one of the founding companies of the 5% club. Which means they give back 5% of their profits to funding community non-profits, that have included the Salvation Army, Habitat for Humanity, and the Red Cross.
I am old enough that I have no problem with the bell ringers, in fact for me they are part of the holiday atmosphere. A reminder when you are out there running up your credit card bills, that there are some out there that need help and support. I've never had a bell ringer acost me. The only time they say anything is a brief thank you when you make a donation.
i like them, like gardener said it adds to the atmosphere. and ive never had one be mean or rude or anything. i think its kind of a jirk thing for any store to not let them be there, they dont pressure people (from my experence) and they help people who need it.
i agree with gardner too, and though i dont donate every time i see them, i try to do it as much as possible. and i think that if you have enough to shop at target, you could at least put a little change in the bucket. its not like they hassle you like army recruters and i love the sound of their bells
Just FYI, this is false. I worked for Target for about 6 months and started at minimum wage (which is $6.75/hr in California). After the first 3 months I got a 25-cent raise to $7/hr. (the next raise comes after you have worked there a full year, and is typically another 25-50 cents or so)
Another reason I boycott Target along with Walmart. Time to show by withholding your dollars that you don't agree. Riga, sorry that had to be your first job. They definitely don't care about people and their lives. DD may have been speaking to the minimum Federal wage, which is way lower than most states. Which is currently: $5.15.
I've donated five dollars when I've only had ten in my wallet, and know what ...I've never been sorry. Ever heard the saying that you will be rewarded ten fold by a generous act? I've never kept count, but I've never ever regretted donating to the less fortunate. Been there, and scrambled to get back up into the mainstream. I know what struggle is. Not sure I am there again, but I have toilet paper to wipe my butt, and food to feed my animals. Those are the important things.
Bush's push for Faith based support has bothered me from the beginning. I always saw it as a way to support his evangelical supports without question. I wish I knew how much much money had been sent in their direction. Hopefully a new administration will ask for more accountability. Salvation Army bell ringers have never been seen by me as discriminating. Certainly they have their beliefs and restrictions, but it's only when the government makes them a body that able to discriminate that this becomes an issue and GW did this.
I'll boycott Target...Then again we don't yet have them up here so I don't have to worry about them. I've never had a problem with the S.Army. They'll just stand there ringing their bell, and mind their own business. I personally get sick and tired of groups (such as) girl guides harassing me going in and out of the store.
You know they wouldnt be homeless in the first place if god didnt hate them already... besides every one knows homeless people have no souls so its alright to hate them...^.^
How the hell'd you get "hates the homeless" from that? They have a strict policy against soliciting, and that means everyone. I'm glad they do that, because I want to go shopping without being harassed by Mormons and Jehovah's Witnesses. And the Girl Scouts can leave me the hell alone, too. The Salvation Army is a good cause, and one I greatly support. There is almost certainly a drop off in your area. If it's so important to you, you can take some of your precious time and make the damn trip yourself.
