Understandably, we all have preferences but how about some tact? To the threadstarter, I sincerely hope you find happiness somewhere without inflicting someone with those crass statements, or through more silent, manipulative means, stifling and using a person solely for their ethnic makeup.

 

Westernisation is just.... meh. It pisses me off when people think that Sushi is raw fish! I mean like sure... if it is on A BED OF RICE, but if you're thinking just raw fish, THEN FOR FUCKS SAKE CALL IT SASHIMI!

 

I don't really see the HUGE difference or the reason to be so upset. If I want Sushi, I go to a Japanese restaurant that has a Sushi bar, and I order what I want off the menu. It usually has raw fish in it in some form or presentation. I can't handle extra words like "nigiri" or "maki" so I call it all sushi. Does this make me such a bad person? (I also refuse to eat with chopsticks unless I'm in a country in which they are used, and I take my own spoon with me when I go to India, so I know this makes me a bad person)

Also, please tell me: Are Japanese above all "Easternization" of western things? I think it is common for people to adapt and adjust in this way.

 

i'm asian and didn't find the thread offensive. perhaps i'm used to reading such things from time to time which i usually ignore anyway. i just thought it was kinda' funny and chuckled a bit. but i have a pretty good sense of humor about such things. and when people used to call me oriental it used to irk me but i realize some people are just not used to being around many asians so i shouldn't expect them to know......whatever, it's all good.

Besides, although i've never been there i've heard Japan is VERY 'westernised'. The technology, the economy, the shopping malls, the music...Hell you could say it's one of the biggest 'consumerist cultures' in the world isn't it?
So getting upset about sushi sounds ever so slightly ridiculous...Calm down dear, it's only raw fish!

I'm sure the Japanese will forgive us for our tiny cultural misunderstandings (if they are anything like other asian countries) and sins!

Anyway, my second point;

I really don't see why people are getting upset about the original thread subject. For one thing it doesn't imply people are being predujice, racsist or are discrminating just because they have a paticular generalised liking of one ethnic group over another.
The word 'oriental' might offend, i'll accept that, but their is absolutely nothing wrong with the subject matter...
For example i've travelled a fair bit around asia and have family in Spain. I'm from the UK and I can tell you that I have preferance for certain asian ethnic groups over British white females. I also generally prefer espanic females over British white females, in general...Because i'm racsist? No. Because as I human with a mind and desires I have certain preferences based on shapes, forms, skin tones, size etc.

I recognise the beauty everywhere in all ethnic groups but some I just prefer to others. Asians just happen to really rock the boat for me...

But I agree on the 'tackiness' in the way the thread was started... But get over it.

 

About the sashimi spiff, I can accept ignorance as plain annoying as lack of refinement or understanding in a cuisine. But what the fuck, as long as they don't call it something horrible or derogatory, at least others are enjoying the food, right?

I agree - there is a fine line between preference and making it a fetish. When it's a preference, it's part of the package. Sometimes it's not always that way and there are people who seek OUT stereotypical qualities of a culture in a person. Let me better explain - it is dating a person strictly because of their colour and because of what their background means to you. It's NOT seeing them as a whole person with a personality that may or may not be firmly grounded in that culture.

 

well the original poster is canadian so the word oriental out of his mouth means one of two things.....

1. an insult
2. he is just plain ignorant

I am surprised to learn that "oriental" is considered derogatory. I guess we only know what I was taught. I was never taught this was a "no-no". I was taught that calling someone an Oriental simply menat that they came from the orient.
I am also surprised that sushi doesn't mean raw fish, but that it applies to raw fish searved with rice, and maybe sea-weed, or something like that.
I mean no disrespect here, only admitting my ignorane to these topics.
As for the original post I also find Asian women to be very attractive, as are spanish, norweegan (sp), mexican, polish, french, etc.
I have been to Asia (the Philippines) and am planning to visit Vietnam in a few years.
This is a little off topic, but since I mentioned that I have been to the Philippines I will mention why.
I found out, from a friend who went there, about a village where the children are very poor, and didn't even have clothing. To make a long story short, I started sponsoring a family there, and that grew to 3 families. This was back in 2000. In 2003 I got the chance to go there and I met the families that I had been sponsoring. I consider them to be my extended family. They are a wonderful polite, thankful, lovely group (if I can get away with a generalization here) and I was very impressed with all the people I met there.
