I used to only use bongs but I recently read some studies that say water filtration is actually counter-productive, blocking more of the psychoactive thc than carcinogens (http://www.maps.org/mmj/vaporizer.html) I tried to fashion a vaporizer from a solderiing iron, nalgene bottle, some tubing, etc... The hardest part for me was making the bowl on the end of the iron. I ended up using aluminum foil. I tried it out last night and it fucked me up but I thought I could detect a metallic taste in the vapor I was breathing in. Could the aluminum be vaporizing along with the thc or am I just being paranoid?

maybe paranoid but al foil is rather thin so could be burning!?

as for cups here's some idee's if the tip on your iron is removable get a copper end cap or brass ferrel fitting a nice size for filling 3/8" or 1/2" maybe whatever looks like your favorite size smoking pipe then get a screw to hold cap on to the iron voila!

just drill a hole the same size tip push cap on hold it on with a ball of hash! HA Ha !

The tin foil will be burning, and im not 100% sure on this, but im told inhaling tinfoil fumes will cause alsheimers later in life... might be an urban legend though.
I made my vaporizer out of a lightbulb, works great.

lightbulb is easiest but whatever you do, stop using that contraption you built. aluminum and tin oxides can cause irrepairable brain damage (especially at levels at which you can taste it)
