I love Brighton. Only been there a couple of times, doing some fundraising work, but it was a fantastic place. My only complaint: not a single fish and chip place served scraps (aka crispies). I can't seem to find them outside of Suffolk, and occassionally in the North. It's a travesty I tell you....

I never heard of crispies?? But then as mentioned, we don't eat fish and chips down here. We're more organic, fair-trade, pissy image conscious middle class kind of folk who like looking down on others because they can't afford the same food as us.

I love this city but am very, very unhappy with what is happening in the North Laine at the moment. There was another thread on here a little while ago where I wrote some drug crazed tirade regarding bastard developments. Catch the pure aggressive insanity and my own brand of skewed logic here.

    I don't really hate students.

Well, I dislike quite a lot but hey hey, I'm a bit of a cynical dickhead who doesn't like to see other people having fun. I'm not great at conveying sarcasm either.

Support independent traders in the North Laine and Brighton. Boycott Jubilee Street and the unecessary eyesores and chainstores built there by profit hungry bastards. Keep Brighton groovy!

Just to play devil's advocate for a moment:

Small traders are profit hungry too, they're just not as good at making it.

That's half tongue in cheek, half tongue out of cheek. I'm a socialist, and naturally quite opposed to big business trampling all over the little guys. But at the same time, is the answer in small business? Aren't many of them just less successful capitalists?

Well I'm talking about the North Laine in particular which has a lot of very odd & individual shops and the like, which as I mentioned before are being put out of business by the big chains moving in on what has traditionally been the centre of counter culture and quirkiness in this town.

Yes, they are just 'less successful capitalists' but at the same time many of these owners will be content with a small shop and not want to buy the whole road to hike the prices up or purposefully seek to put their competitors out of business. Less cuthroat capitalism if you like.

To be honest I see no need to build a starbucks there. There are more than enough coffeeshops around there so it's not to offer people more choice, but for the council to sell away the individuality to the highest bidder (always a chain). Obviously not all indies are perfect but there are some businesses down there which are genuinely run for love and not just for maximum profit...

Brighton is one place that I have never ever visited. I have heard really lovely things about it though. One day I will get there... one day!
