Actually, if you look up the definition of Bigot, it is just an idea. Acting on that bigotry isn't part of the definition. You are thinking of descrimination perhaps?
Do we need to keep beating a dead horse? I already acknowledged that free speech is PART of it. And that's exactly what it is...ONE PART. Not the most IMPORTANT thing itself.
aaaaaaaaand we're back. Ok, we can agree that you believe in freedom as long as that freedom isn't used to do something or think something that you don't approve of.
Look, Lib, what the chick said in the other thread wasnt cool. Itd be like me saying I dont respect christians, or conservatives, or whatever a group made by choice is (since poly/open is a choice to exercise, not something youre born with like skin pigmentation)... but there is such a thing as letting it get to you too much. Youre giving her way more power over you than is due. The world is full of idiots and people who will disagree with you, you have to know that by now, sometimes you just have to let it roll off of you instead of letting them bother you.
I don't want Skip to ban bigots, no. But, I am referring to the idea that we need to educate more people not to be bigots. And we are. My only concern is for those idealists who are so stuck on the idea that free speech is the greatest possible thing in the world that they ignore the other essential freedoms and RIGHTS. I agree with you. Some would disagree and believe it is free speech to put others' lives in danger. Good points. But, I do believe that there should be entitlements against discrimination. And apparently so does our system now (something good about it). Again, good points, but I do believe that society does need and deserves protections against discrimination and bigotry. Because both of those things LIMITS FREEDOM. Thanks for answering my questions!
Well, if that "something I don't approve of" deals with the life, liberty and pursuit of happiness for humankind, civil rights and human rights, then you're right. I believe in FREEDOM FOR ALL, and BIGOTRY IS A LIMITATION OF THAT. Bigotry is DIRECTLY OPPOSED TO FREEDOM FOR ALL. So call it that if you want, but I don't apologize for it.
Well, I will always fight bigotry. And yes, it pisses me off to no end. I can't stand those who try to deny others their basic HUMAN RIGHTS. Hitlers and fascists don't need be ignored, they need to be challenged.
I'm back. sheeeez...that was close. Does my hair look uneven now? Libertine is not a bigot. Period.. As much as we like being tolerant around here, you eventually get tired of getting kicked in the balls. (I'm speaking figuratively..don't get any ideas, guys) You spend a lot of effort crafting a nice post...an intelligent response..or just something to entertain..then the trolls come. You try to repress your natural response for as long as you can then.....BOOM...you can't take it anymore. (out come the mood enhancers) Good grief guys, you've been through it too.... Give our brother Libertine some love, not more pain.
Bigot - One who is strongly partial to one's own group, religion, race, or politics and is intolerant of those who differ. (Just thought I'd put that out there for clarification's sake.) Allrighty then, let's get to work on the various bigots out there. First we'll round up all the religious people, then we'll get started on the political activists, then the supremecists, then the parents who think that their kid is better than the neighbor's kid, then the men who prefer women with big boobs, then the... </sarcasm>
Ok, I'll admit, that last post was trollish, but I was trying to make a point. Every single person on here is a bigot. They all think that at least on of their opinions is superior to other people's opinions (otherwise they would change their opinion to the superior one). Every person is, in some way, intolerant of another person's point of view. For example, if you don't support the "War on terror" then you are a bigot. If you do support it, then you are still a bigot. Either way, you are not being completely tolerant of the other side's point of view.
Yeah..He knows who his friends are. I'm just cheerleading. You know how I am. A joke, a cheer, something unintelligible....repeat forever... Hang in there buddy.
That's a generalization. Like saying "Everyone's a hypocrite". It is true to a point, but when a bigot's "right to free expression" limits the rights of others to life, liberty and/or the pursuit of happiness it becomes the lesser argument. A human's right to basic rights comes before a bigot's right to bash (IF they ever come into conflict--but, as we know, BIGOTRY is conflict).
Okie, I appreciate your friendship and your wisdom. And I do admit I get "un-Libertine like" when I get angry (which is unusual for me). But, bigotry is something that irks the shit out of me. I've lost a couple of friends for laying into them about their bigotry.
A bigot *bashing* somebody doesn't violate their rights. You can call me every racists/sexist name in the book, and it in no way violates my rights.
